Caught on Camera: Traffic Cop Tells Driver She Can Relax Because ‘We Only Kill Black People’
Stunning and Grotesque Remarks
A Cobb County police officer is under investigation after dash cam video revealed he had pulled over a driver and subsequently told her she could relax because cops only shoot Black people.
“Remember, we only kill black people. We only kill black people, right?†Lt. Greg Abbott told an apparently nervous woman too afraid to move her hands after a DUI stop.
Atlanta’s WSB-TV exclusively obtained the video. Their report is above, the raw video is below.
The officer had told the driver to call the person she had told to come pick her up after a highway stop because he was arresting her and was going to impound her car. He tells her to use her phone, which he notes is in her lap.Â
When she says she’s afraid because she’s seen too many videos of police shooting people, Lt. Abbott responds: “But you’re not Black.”
And then, “Remember, we only kill black people. We only kill black people, right? All the videos you’ve seen, have you seen the black people get killed?â€
While the audio of the driver’s comments on the dash cam video is at times garbled, it does not sound like she had mentioned race.
“No matter what context it was said, it shouldn’t have been said,â€Â Cobb County police Chief Mike Register tells WSB.Â
Abbott’s attorney in a statement says the officer “was attempting to de-escalate a situation involving an uncooperative passenger.”
