“Sick of ‘Liberal’ Men” Who “Act Like Old-School Misogynists”
Acclaimed writer, activist, and philanthropist J.K. Rowling is known for her elegant swatting of Twitter trolls who attack her, or others, for their politics or their identities. But on Friday the famous Harry Potter author posted a lengthy tweetstorm blasting men who think they’re liberal but devolve into using “crude and humiliating words” to attack women whose views they dislike.
“Just unfollowed a man whom I thought was smart and funny, because he called Theresa May a whore,” Rowling tweeted, referring to the British conservative Prime Minister who led her party into devastating losses in Thursday’s snap elections.
“If you can’t disagree with a woman without reaching for all those filthy old insults, screw you and your politics,” Rowling continued. “I’m sick of ‘liberal’ men whose mask slips every time a woman displeases them, who reach immediately for crude and humiliating words associated with femaleness, act like old-school misogynists and then preen themselves as though they’ve been brave,” she charged.Â

Response was extremely positive and many were grateful to have a very necessary conversation trumpeted by someone so widely beloved and respected.
Sadly, many cowards took the opportunity to attack Rowling with the very words she used as examples of those people use to reveal their misogyny, necessitating this warning from Twitter:
