Charity Rating Organization Forced to Remove Hate Group Warnings After Its Own Staff Gets Threats

‘Harassment and Threats Directed at Our Staff and Leadership’

One of the nation’s top and most respected charity rating organizations came under fire last week from the anti-LGBT religious right and conservative groups after they added warnings to profiles of hate groups denoting that they are, in fact, hate groups.

Guidestar, on the belief that Americans deserve to know exactly where their hard-earned money is going, had added banners to its pages for groups like the Family Research Council, the “alt-right” group run by Richard Spencer, and 44 other organizations it rates that were identified as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center, as the AP reports.

Here’s how the anti-gay hate group Family Research Council responded:

Why?

Guidestar was forced to remove the warnings from the hate groups they report on because they and their staff were receiving threats.

In a statement Friday Guidestar announced, “a significant amount of the feedback we’ve received in recent days has shifted from constructive criticism to harassment and threats directed at our staff and leadership.”

It’s not surprising. Supporters of the anti-gay religious right and anti-gay hate groups, along with hate groups of all sorts, are not opposed to using tactics of hate to attack anyone who gets in their way.

Guidestar adds, “driven by both our commitment to objectivity and our concerns for our staff’s wellbeing—we have decided to remove the SPLC annotations from these 46 organizations for the time being.”

So, hate group supporting thugs threatened staffers at an organization whose sole mission is to help people donate money to groups that in most cases were created to help people and causes most in need.

In case anyone wants to know what organizations are hate groups, they can take a look at the Southern Poverty Law Center’s vast resources.
