Twitter Erupts in Anger as Republican Makes Flat-Out False Claim Against Hillary Clinton During Senate Hearing With FBI Director
Clinton: ‘Of Course I Take Absolute Personal Responsibility. I Was the Candidate. I Was the Person Who Was on the Ballot.’
People on Twitter erupted in anger as U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) decided an important, highly-anticipated, and nationally-televised Senate hearing featuring FBI Director James Comey was the perfect venue to engage in petty partisan hackery and lying.Â
Wednesday morning Sen. Cornyn, who also serves as the Senate Majority Whip, opened his line of questioning of Director Comey by saying he was “disappointed to see that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in the news yesterday, essentially blaming you and blaming everything other than herself for her loss on November the 8th.”

That’s a flat-out lie.
At a Women for Women International conference on Tuesday, CNN’s Christiane Amanpour interviewed the former Democratic nominee. Clinton said she absolutely made mistakes, and takes “absolute personal responsibility” for them.
“Of course I take absolute personal responsibility. I was the candidate. I was the person who was on the ballot. I am very aware of the challenges, the problems, the shortfalls that we had,†Secretary Clinton said.
“I’m very proud of the campaign we ran,” she added, noting her pride in her staff and volunteers. But she acknowledged, “It wasn’t a perfect campaign.”
“Did we make mistakes? Of course we did. Did I make mistakes? Oh my gosh, yes,” Clinton told the audience.
And yes, citing Nate Silver’s analysis, Clinton said that FBI Director Jim Comey’s letter and Wikileaks are what caused people who were leaning toward voting for her to not. There’s really no question, statistically, about that statement, as Silver has shown.
Cornyn lied. Period. And engaged in an unnecessary partisan attack that many found offensive.
On Twitter many responded, like this ournalism professor and Washington Post writer:
John CORNYN, one of our very worst Senators, just touted his past call for a Special Prosecutor on Clinton even as he rejects one for Trump.

And many others:
@TheFreshBrew @Info54015797Tux @JohnCornyn @GOP Cornyn is a massive tool. Lies saying HRC blamed everyone but self. Nope. Said she blamed herself first and foremost. #ComeyKilledAmerica

Dear Cornyn: Pence also used a private email server, but we all know the GOP is the party of alternative facts.

@debbiesideris @ALT_uscis Yes Cornyn is an ass. I wrote him when he supported blocking Garland. His response was so snotty: we’ll let the election decide. #MoFo 👎ðŸ»

@AliVelshi Listen to Cornyn’s statement at Comey hearing: “Unfortunate” that H Clinton was in the news. Effectively, he told her to shut up.
