Mulvaney: Trump ‘Willing to Think Outside the Box’ with ‘Good Shutdown’ of Government
“It’s Part of That Overall ‘Drain the Swamp’ Mentalityâ€
Director of OMB Mick Mulvaney joined John Dickerson on CBS’ “Face the Nation†today, defending both the passage of TrumpCare and Donald Trump’s call for a “good shutdown†of government.
“Our country needs a good ‘shutdown’ in September to fix this mess!†Trump tweeted:
either elect more Republican Senators in 2018 or change the rules now to 51%. Our country needs a good “shutdown” in September to fix mess!

“I saw that tweet,†Mulvaney told Dickerson. “What we just did this week was fine and passable, but not ideal,†he said of 24 million Americans potentially losing their health insurance.
“I think the president is frustrated that the process in Washington is broken,†he continued. “The appropriations, the spending process, Congress using the power of the purse has been broken here in Washington for more than ten years.â€
“I think a ‘good shutdown’ would be one that could help fix that,†Mulvaney insisted. “It’s part of that overall ‘drain the swamp’ mentality… this president is willing to think outside of the box and do things differently around here.”
“If that comes to a shutdown in September, so be it,†Mulvaney urged.
According to TIME, the government shutdown in 2013 cost the economy $24 billion:
Here’s a breakdown of some of the economic cost by our calculations:
- About $3.1 billion in lost government services, according to the research firm IHS
- $152 million per day in lost travel spending, according to the U.S. Travel Association
- $76 million per day lost because of National Parks being shut down, according to the National Park Service
- $217 million per day in lost federal and contractor wages in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area alone
Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia also joined the program, responding to Mulvaney’s comments. “There is no good shutdown,” he said. “I’ve been through a shutdown and it did not end well.” Watch:
