Trump on Syria: ‘Something Should Happen’

‘He’s There and I Guess He’s Running Things’

Aboard Air Force One President Donald Trump was asked by reporters his thoughts on the attack by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on his own citizens, with what has been verified as sarin gas. Sarin is a chemical nerve agent classified as a weapon of mass destruction.

Asked if he thinks President Assad should leave power, President Trump said, according to pool reports: “I think what Assad did is terrible. I think what happened in Syria is one of the truly egregious crimes. It shouldn’t have happened. It shouldn’t be allowed to happen.”

When reporters pressed the President on the same question, if Assad should leave power, Trump responded: “I think what happened in Syria is a disgrace to humanity. He’s there and I guess he’s running things, so something should happen.”

Meanwhile, at approximately the same time, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was more responsive, discussing a path to “Assad leaving” power.

He also stated, “We are considering an appropriate response for this chemical weapons attack,” and said, “it is a serious matter and requires a serious response.”
