Trump on Syria: ‘Something Should Happen’
‘He’s There and I Guess He’s Running Things’
Aboard Air Force One President Donald Trump was asked by reporters his thoughts on the attack by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on his own citizens, with what has been verified as sarin gas. Sarin is a chemical nerve agent classified as a weapon of mass destruction.
Asked if he thinks President Assad should leave power, President Trump said, according to pool reports: “I think what Assad did is terrible. I think what happened in Syria is one of the truly egregious crimes. It shouldn’t have happened. It shouldn’t be allowed to happen.â€
When reporters pressed the President on the same question, if Assad should leave power, Trump responded: “I think what happened in Syria is a disgrace to humanity. He’s there and I guess he’s running things, so something should happen.â€
Meanwhile, at approximately the same time, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was more responsive, discussing a path to “Assad leaving” power.
He also stated, “We are considering an appropriate response for this chemical weapons attack,” and said, “it is a serious matter and requires a serious response.”
