Twenty-four hours after President Donald Trump bizarrely accused his predecessor of wiretapping him, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer doubled down on the allegations.Â
“Reports concerning potentially politically motivated investigations immediately ahead of the 2016 election are very troubling,” Spicer said in a statement early Sunday. “President Trump is requesting that as part of their investigation into Russian activity, the congressional intelligence committees exercise their oversight authority to determine whether executive branch investigative powers were abused in 2016. Neither the White House nor the President will comment further until such oversight is conducted.”
Neither Trump nor White House officials have provided any evidence whatsoever to support the president’s claim that the Obama administration carried out a Watergate-like conspiracy to undermine his candidacy. In fact, the allegations appeared to be based on nothing more than a report from the right-wing publication Breitbart.Â
Several former senior U.S. intelligence officials, as well as an Obama spokesperson, have refuted Trump’s claims. Even a current senior U.S. official in the Trump administration reportedly told MSNBC he has no idea what the president was talking about.Â
Democrats in Congress have slammed Trump’s allegations, and even some Republican lawmakers are calling on the president to produce evidence in support of them.Â
Here’s how Twitter reacted to Spicer’s statement. Â
Spicer references “reports†of “potentially politically motivated investigations†before election. What reports? Breitbart? Trump’s tweets? pic.twitter.com/8tvkTeBQ9V

Translation: The White House won’t provide proof to President Trump’s verifiable claim. We don’t want to talk about this anymore. https://t.co/QrOAXzujNR

Those “reports” came from right wing radio, and this looks like the WH chasing its tail after the pres put them in an unmanageable position. https://t.co/4zEny1QbTz

This seems to be an admission by the WH that Trump based his Twitter comments yesterday on “reports” rather than info from officials. https://t.co/RloQVbQkXe

The White House seems to be admitting it has no evidence for previous claims, so now it’s asking for an investigation to find it. pic.twitter.com/5MIKQ0ey8d

“Reports” meaning Breitbart, Hannity and conservative radio conspiracy theorists https://t.co/aY9JnKr8QE

There are no “reports,” you Goebbels-without-a-suit-that-fits. Only the ravings of that psychopath of a boss whose shit you peddle #GetOut https://t.co/hd8caTX5uj

It makes sense when you get to the last line: this is just their way of attempting to disappear Trump’s outburst https://t.co/odLBMo8ea1

To recap:
1) Trump reads Breitbart story alleging Obama wiretap
2) Trump tweets it as fact
3) WH doubles down, calling for investigation— Abby D. Phillip (@abbydphillip) March 5, 2017
