As Maddow Reveals Donald Trump’s Tax Return Speculation Grows He Released It Himself

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow got a major scoop Tuesday night: the main portion of Donald Trump’s 2005 tax return was leaked. David Cay Johnston, a Donald Trump and finance expert says the showed up in his mailbox and he doesn’t know who leaked them. But even Johnston acknowledges that Trump himself could have leaked them.

Donald Trump is famous for knowing how to change the national conversation. Reporters have learned to not fall for Trump’s outrageous tweets and inane remarks – sometimes – as we try to keep our focus on the important stories.

It’s no secret, Trump is having another terrible week. His approval rating hit a new low, TrumpCare – the GOP ObamaCare “replacement” is a disaster and getting panned even by Republicans, and the stories about Russia continue to grow.

It’s the perfect time for a diversion.

On Twitter, many, like ThinkProgress editor Judd Legum, noticed the copy of Trump’s return is stamped “Client Copy,” meaning it’s likely not the copy sent to the IRS, and it likely came from Trump’s bustiness office. 

CNN’s Keith Boykin notes this is reminiscent of the time Trump announced President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, not Kenya:
