As Maddow Reveals Donald Trump’s Tax Return Speculation Grows He Released It Himself
Did He?
MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow got a major scoop Tuesday night: the main portion of Donald Trump’s 2005 tax return was leaked. David Cay Johnston, a Donald Trump and finance expert says the showed up in his mailbox and he doesn’t know who leaked them. But even Johnston acknowledges that Trump himself could have leaked them.

Donald Trump is famous for knowing how to change the national conversation. Reporters have learned to not fall for Trump’s outrageous tweets and inane remarks – sometimes – as we try to keep our focus on the important stories.
It’s no secret, Trump is having another terrible week. His approval rating hit a new low, TrumpCare – the GOP ObamaCare “replacement” is a disaster and getting panned even by Republicans, and the stories about Russia continue to grow.
It’s the perfect time for a diversion.
On Twitter, many, like ThinkProgress editor Judd Legum, noticed the copy of Trump’s return is stamped “Client Copy,” meaning it’s likely not the copy sent to the IRS, and it likely came from Trump’s bustiness office.Â
Interesting part here is that these say “CLIENT COPY” on the second page
Who sent these to @DavidCayJ? pic.twitter.com/ozyQqVMwD2

@AltStateDpt The returns have “client copy” stamped on them. I think he sent them himself to divert attn from Comey’s statement tomorrow. pic.twitter.com/Zdtl91D3E4

CNN’s Keith Boykin notes this is reminiscent of the time Trump announced President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii, not Kenya:
This #TrumpTaxes story reminds me of his fake press conference last fall to renounce birtherism: “We got played.” pic.twitter.com/pW9PBCvAHg

Others certainly agree Trump may be the leaker:
David Cay Johnson who has known Trump for decades has said that Trump could have leaked these returns himself.

Bet Trump himself leaked these 2 pages of his 2005 1040. So you won’t have health care – Look, over here – I paid taxes! @maddow #maddow

Second time that part of Trump’s taxes leaked only w/limited pages. Supports theory Trump leaked them. Johnston said that was possible.
— Mike Signorile (@MSignorile) March 15, 2017
Trump’s tax return is a pretty effective distraction from the disastrous rollout of the GOP’s health care proposal.

I smell a rat. If #TrumpsTaxReturns never got leaked in 17 months of a heated presidential campaign, how did they suddenly get leaked now?
— Keith Boykin (@keithboykin) March 15, 2017
I honestly think @POTUS leaked these two pages of #TrumpTaxReturns himself to throw us off his trail off Russia and other controversies.
— Keith Boykin (@keithboykin) March 15, 2017
Staring to think Trump leaked this himself.
Shows none of his shady Russia cnxns AND shows he paid taxes.
This may be an epic troll.

Trump just leaked his own taxes to distract us from:#Maddow #Trumprussia
