In case you missed it, in an interview that’s set to air prior to the Super Bowl, President Donald Trump defended Russian President Vladimir Putin by suggesting that the U.S. also has “a lot of killers.”Â
Fox News host Bill O’Reilly asked Trump about his relationship with Putin.Â
“I do respect him. Well, I respect a lot of people, but that doesn’t mean I’ll get along with them,” Trump said.Â
“Putin is a killer,†O’Reilly responded.
“There are a lot of killers. We have a lot of killers,†Trump said. “Well, you think our country is so innocent?â€
Later, Trump added: “If Russia helps us in the fight against ISIS, which is a major fight, and Islamic terrorism all around the world, major fight. That’s a good thing.”Â
The Washington Post notes it’s not the first time Trump has made a similar statement.
In a 2015 interview with Trump, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough pointed out that Putin “kills journalists that don’t agree with him.” Â
“Well, I think that our country does plenty of killing, too, Joe,†Trump responded.Â
Trump’s interview with O’Reilly is set to air at 4 p.m. Eastern on Sunday. Â
Here’s how Twitter reacted to Trump’s statements.Â
Trump puts US on moral par with Putin’s Russia. Never in history has a President slandered his country like this. https://t.co/LrP8ycG1Y9

When the press said Putin’s a killer, it was adorable to see how Trump stood by his man and criticized America instead. That’s true love.

Trump saying we’re no better than Putin’s Russia is a big test for conservatives. Pay attention to who denounces this & who doesn’t.

Disgusting. There is nothing Trump won’t do to praise Putin, comparing the US to a dictator of 17 years who murders & bombs his own people. https://t.co/8qtLtV1nmN

We’re all clear that Trump wasn’t making a leftyish critique of American history, but shrugging off murder as a political tool, right?

.@POTUS statement suggesting moral equivalence between Putin’s Russia and the United States of America is deeply troubling and wrong.

When has a Democratic political activists been poisoned by the GOP, or vice versa? We are not the same as #Putin. MR

If a Democratic president talked the way Trump does about Putin and America, the Right would go absolutely ape — and be 100 percent right.

Not surprising Trump defends Putin murdering his opponents, Trump more than hinted his NRA nuts assassinate Hillary.

Putin has “stuff” on Trump: Dossier or similar scandal. Narcissist Trump will take us all down rather than risk exposure. #DworkinReport

Shameful what Trump said about Putin and comparison to America. Putin is a war criminal, among other things. I shudder for what is near.
