Protesters braved frigid temperatures at JFK Airport in New York City on Saturday, after several migrants were detained under President Donald Trump’s executive order banning entry to the United States from seven Muslim-majority countries. Some of those who were detained reportedly were in the air when the order was signed. BuzzFeed News was carrying a livestream of the protest on Facebook.Â
An Iraqi translator who assisted the U.S. military for 10 years was released after being detained at JFK, but only after Democratic Congress members traveled to the airport to assist him, and the ACLU filed a lawsuit. However, several other migrants reportedly were still being detained:Â

The Trump administration appeared to be making up the details of the executive order as it went along, and reportedly failed to adequately prepare Customs and Border Protection officials for its implementation: Â
All indications here at JFK are that White House did nothing to prep customs and border patrol to deal with tconsequences of executive order

On Saturday morning, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security said the ban would apply to green-card holders, meaning it could bar 500,000 permanent legal residents from returning if they visited their home countries. But later, a White House official reportedly said people with green cards will be allowed in on a case-by-case basis:Â
UPDATE: Green card holders from seven countries in Trump’s ban have to be cleared in to U.S. on case-by-case basis – administration official

Still later, a White House pool reporter from The New York Times confirmed the initial report that the ban will apply to green card holders:Â

More on the chaos from Twitter:Â
State Dept: citizens of 7 nations in Trump order with dual-nationality also barred. Meaning UK/Iraqi citizens, for example, can’t enter. pic.twitter.com/7YXEk7XueN

“Case-by-case basis” still effectively means green card holders are trapped in the US. Few will risk leaving not being sure they can return.

If transition team was working for weeks to roll this out, why are authorities on the ground so confused abt how to handle folks in transit?

My lawyer just told me that every lawyer he knows with even basic familiarity with immigration law is at an airport right now. God bless.

I want to repeat: Green card holders were handcuffed, their social media was reviewed, and they were asked their views on Trump#MuslimBan
