UPDATING: Trump’s Wall Will Now Be Paid for by Americans – White House Announces Tax on Imports From Mexico
Trump Breaks Major Campaign Promise
EDITOR’S NOTE: See final update at bottom of article.
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer says President Donald Trump will be imposing a 20 percent tax on all imports coming in to the U.S. From Mexico. In other words, Americans will be paying 20 percent extra on all goods coming from or even through Mexico. Â
It appears the Trump administration has lost the battle between Donald Trump and Mexico’s President, Enrique Peña Nieto, who has repeatedly refused to pay for Trump’s wall.

Trump literally, about one hour before Spicer made the annoucement, said this:
“I’ve said many times that American people will not pay for the wall and I’ve made that clear to the government of Mexico,” Pres. Trump says pic.twitter.com/tVU1OmY8Ob

It’s important to note that the imposition of an import tariff violates the NAFTA trade agreement. Also, President Trump would have to jump through at least one hoop to legally impose the tariff.Â
Trump has been promising Mexico would pay for his wall almost since he launched his campaign in June of 2015.Â
To be clear: this isn’t “Mexico” paying for a wall; it’s U.S. consumers paying ridiculously higher prices on goods. https://t.co/Bzj5V2eQaW

UPDATE –
Some responses via Twitter:
It turns out that “Mexico†paying for the wall means American consumers pay higher taxes when we buy groceries.
— Matthew Yglesias (@mattyglesias) January 26, 2017
Um. This is the exact opposite of making Mexico pay for the wall. https://t.co/QdTwC0pnlq
— Dell Cameron (@dellcam) January 26, 2017
So to pay for the Mexico border wall, all the products we buy from Mexico just got more expensive.
Great job!

So by “we’ll make Mexico pay for the wall,” Trump really meant “we’ll make American consumers pay for the wall” https://t.co/sBW5ueg97o

UPDATE II: 4:11 PM EST –
Via CNN:
“It clearly provides the funding and does so in a way that the American taxpayer is wholly respected,” Spicer said Thursday.Spicer dodged reporters’ questions about the impact of the border tax on American consumers, instead stressing the tax’s benefits for American workers.“I’m not going to get into it,” he added when pressed about businesses that manufacture goods in Mexico passing along the tax to American consumers.
UPDATE III: 4:17 PM EST –
