Kellyanne Conway, Donald Trump’s campaign manager, finally acknowledged on Sunday that at least one of the GOP presidential nominee’s supporters is, in fact, “deplorable.”Â
Conway’s statement, which came 16 months after Trump launched his campaign and just nine days before the election, was in response to viral video (above) of a supporter shouting “Jew-S-A” while the crowd shouted “U.S.A.” during a Trump rally in Phoenix on Saturday. Prior to his chant, the man told news reporters whom Trump frequently bashes at rallies: “You’re going down! You’re the enemy! You’re the ones who are working for the devil!”
Trump’s campaign has repeatedly attacked Democrat Hillary Clinton over her assertion last month that many of his supporters belong in “a basket of deplorables.” On Sunday, during CNN’s “State of The Union,” host Jake Tapper asked Conway about the video.Â
“We’ve seen a lot of anti-semites and racists and misogynists who support the Trump candidacy,” Tapper pointed out. “Would you call that man deplorable?”Â
“Yes, I would,” Conway replied. “His conduct is completely unacceptable and does not represent our campaign or our candidate. … That man’s conduct was deplorable, and had I been there, I would have asked security to remove him immediately.”Â
However, Conway denied that the man’s conduct was in any way representative of Trump supporters, insisting that most people at his rallies are “U.S.A.-loving Americans.”Â
Tapper responded by saying that while a majority of Trump’s supporters may not fit the bill, the GOP nominee has created “a comfort level” for his racist and anti-semitic supporters by refusing to condemn them “in a very serious way.”Â
“He says things like, ‘Oh sure, I disavow, I disavow,'” Tapper said. “But he has never seriously said: ‘I don’t want the support of those people. They are reprehensible. They have nothing to do with me.’â€Â
“Yes he has,” Conway responded. “He has done that, and let me just repeat on his behalf, that that’s the way this campaign feels.”Â
