Top House Republican Warns He Is Already Preparing ‘Years’ of Investigations Against Hillary Clinton
‘You Could Take Any One of These Stories and Have a Year’s Worth of Investigations’
The Republican Party has spent tens of millions of tax dollars and countless hours investigating Hillary Clinton, including eight separate committees holding 32 separate hearings on Benghazi alone. (Some say more.) They found no evidence of wrongdoing. That doesn’t include the other investigations Republicans in Congress have held over the decades into Hillary Clinton’s actions and statements, none of which has ever produced one iota of proof she has ever acted illegally.
Yet today one of the most powerful Republicans in the House, Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah, the Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, tells The Washington Post Congressional Republicans are just getting started.
Even before she wins the election, Republicans are preparing what he calls “years” worth of investigations – all at taxpayer expense – into Hillary Clinton.
Even before she wins the election.
“It’s a target-rich environment,†Chaffetz told the Post’s Dave Weigel. “Even before we get to Day One, we’ve got two years worth of material already lined up. She has four years of history at the State Department, and it ain’t good.â€
Chairman Chaffetz says he’s going to repeat investigations that have been held before, presumably into Benghazi and Clinton’s emails, and he’s going to investigate new topics, too.
“He had sent the committee’s investigators a weekend article from the Wall Street Journal,” Weigel reports, “which asked whether Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D-Va.) had slanted the FBI’s probe of Clinton by helping outside groups put $467,500 into the campaign of Virginia senate candidate Jill McCabe, whose husband Andrew later became deputy director of the FBI.”
“It seems like an obscene amount of money for a losing race,†said Chaffetz. “The ties between the governor and the Clintons are well-known. He raises money for a lot of people, but why so much for this one person?â€
And he makes clear there will be no inaugural honeymoon.
“If Hillary Clinton brings in the same gang — Loretta Lynch, Cheryl Mills, Huma Abedin, Jake Sullivan — she has her cast of characters,” Chaffetz, clearly wholly biased, says. “If they put on the same play, she’s not going to get good reviews from the critics. Every single time we turn around, this puzzle gets more complicated with more pieces to it. That story about the $12 million from Morocco to the Clinton Foundation? You could take any one of these stories and have a year’s worth of investigations.”
The Clinton campaign has already fired back, saying Rep. Chaffetz is “already planning to further abuse his office.”

Some responses via Twitter:
@daveweigel that’s chaffetz, blithely oblivious to the notion that he might well overplay his hand, unleashing public scorn on a major scale

Oh good, I was worried we wouldn’t win the 2018 midterms. pic.twitter.com/MpADWFTw6F

@goodwillfiction @goldengateblond Chaffetz is shaping up to be… Joe McCarthy w/o the alchohol dependancy. @jasoninthehouse is a natural.

we have to take back the House of Representatives because we can’t have someone like Jason Chaffetz in charge of a committee

From all reports, Utahns are rejecting ultra-right obstructionism this year. What do they think of Chaffetz now? https://t.co/tvDbc6Fqie
