Independents Leaving Trump ‘In Droves’
Independent voters are flocking to Hillary Clinton, and away from Donald Trump, a just-released Quinnipiac poll taken October 5-6 finds. Clinton now leads the bombastic billionaire by six points in a head-to-head matchup, 50-44. Less than two weeks ago the Connecticut-based polling institute showed a far-different story, with Clinton in a statistical tie against Trump, 47-46.
Clinton has gained a “20 percentage-point lead among women and a 45-point lead among non-white voters,” with the “biggest shift” coming from independent voters. In Quinnipiac’s Sept. 26 poll, independents backed Trump  42–35. Now, they support Clinton, 46–32.Â
“Post-debate, Hillary Clinton checks all the boxes. With her base of women and non- white voters now solidly behind her and independent voters moving into her column, Donald Trump gets a wake-up call,†Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll said in a release. “The Indies are leaving in droves.â€Â
The RealClearPolitics average now has Clinton with a 4.5 point lead over Trump.Â
Of all the polls RealClearPolitics tracks, only the LA Times/USC Tracking poll, one CNN poll, and one Fox News poll, have shown Trump beating Clinton since the beginning of September.
