102 College Campuses Make LGBT Group’s First Ever ‘Shame List’

Campus Pride Announces ‘Absolute Worst Campuses for LGBTQ Youth’ – Is Your School Listed?

Campus Pride has just announced its release of its first-ever “Shame List,” a group of 102 college campuses that are the “absolute worst” for LGBTQ youth. These schools “have chosen to openly discriminate against LGBTQ youth and have requested Title IX exemptions to perpetuate the harms of religion-based bigotry.”

Among those listed are colleges and universities that are well-known nationwide, and many that are not.

Among the better-known is Bob Jones University is South Carolina, Brigham Young University in Utah and its campus in Idaho, and the largest Christian evangelical school in the world, Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University.

Some lesser-known schools that appear on the list NCRM has reported on over the years, including Carson-Newman University, and Wheaton College.

All 102 schools on Campus Pride’s list are controlled by religious organizations and have applied for a Title IX exemption. Some have been granted the exemption, which allows them to ignore federal law and discriminate against LGBT people.

“Religion-based bigotry is careless and life-threatening,” Shane Windmeyer, Executive Director of Campus Pride, says on th group’s website. “LGBTQ young people face high rates of harassment and violence, especially our trans youth and LGBTQ youth of color. The schools on this list openly discriminate against LGBTQ youth and many of these schools have requested or received Title IX exemptions for no other purpose than to discriminate, expel and ban LGBTQ youth from campus. It is shameful and wrong.”

Windmeyer told NCRM via email today the Shame List “focuses on anti-LGBTQ policies, programs and practices and a track record of that discrimination that is publicly found.  We hope that campus community members will share these openly with us so we can consider for future updates and next year’s list.”

It’s important to note that some of these schools not only discriminate against their LGBT students and employees, but use their influence to help advance anti-LGBT policies or political candidates. Earlier this year Jerry Falwell, Jr. (photo), the president of Liberty University, endorsed Donald Trump, months after the billionaire businessman delivered a speech at the school.
