Honest Error or Homophobic Humiliation? What Really Happened to the Gay Men’s Chorus at Petco Park?

VIDEO – Invited by the Padres to Perform, San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus Embarrassed Instead

The Padres invited the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus to sing the national anthem at Petco Park Saturday night, but as the group stood on the field about the perform, fans heard a taped recording of a woman singing instead. Now SD Gay Men’s Chorus is crying foul, alleging “homophobia within the San Diego Padres organization,” and demanding an investigation.

“No attempt was made to stop the recording and start over,” the SD Gay Men’s Chorus says on Facebook. “No announcement of apology was made to the singers or their friends and families in the stands. No attempt to correct the situation occurred other than to force the 100 men to stand in the spotlight of center field for the song’s duration and then be escorted off the field to the heckles of baseball fans shouting homophobic taunts including ‘You sing like a girl.'”

The Padres have issue a short, two-sentence apology, insisting “a mistake was made in the Petco Park control room.” They “apologize” to “anyone who may be offended.”

That may not be enough.

Outrage built throughout the day Sunday, after the Gay Men’s Chorus say the humiliating “incident followed several days of troubling comments and behavior within the San Diego Padres organization.”

“Three days before the game, San Diego Padres representatives aggressively sought to prevent singers from performing the National Anthem unless they purchased a ticket to the game—even if they did not plan to stay for the game—which was not part of any previous discussion or written or verbal agreement and would have cost the small, community-based non-profit thousands of dollars,” the Gay Men’s Chorus said on Facebook. “The demand eventually was rescinded on Friday following repeated complaints made by SDGMC and San Diego Pride to San Diego Padres management.”

And they’re demanding “the City of San Diego City Attorney’s Office and the City of San Diego Human Relations Commission to independently investigate this incident to determine if members of the San Diego Padres organization engaged in activity in violation of the San Diego Human Rights Ordinance or engaged in any deliberate hate crimes based on sexual orientation.”

The San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting the national anthem “is not always performed live, and this was an instance where a taped version was to be played with the performers on the field.” If that’s true, it would be news to the Gay Men’s Chorus, who were prepared to sing, not just stand on the field.

“I really want to believe that it was an error,” Bob Lehman, executive director of the Gay Men’s Chorus, told the Union-Tribune. “But the first thought was, did they do this on purpose?”

Watch:

The SDGMC stood on the Petco Park field to sing the national anthem in front of 40,000+ fans during pride night and were shocked when the stadium played a female singer instead! Mike Dee the president and CEO of the Padres has apologized, but is it enough? I want answers! Was it a mistake or was it something more. PLEASE SHARE THE VIDEO!!! #sandiegogaymenschorus #sdgmc

On Twitter, many weighed in, with one LGBT activist wondering why no national LGBT org has come to the group’s aid:

After that tweet was posted, Outsports’ Jim Buzinski noted that the Padres CEO needs “to make this right. At a minimum, the chorus needs to be invited back ASAP and given royal treatment. And a donation to the chorus or the  charity of its choice would be in order. And if this was anything but a colossal screw-up by the control room, someone should be fired.”

Buzinski adds thatBilly Bean, who is gay and Major League Baseball’s ambassador for inclusion, played for the Padres and released this statement”:

Commission to Allow Trump, Biden Microphones to Be Muted During Final Debate – After President Warned Against Change

Published

on

The Commission on Presidential Debates will announce a change to the rules for Thursday night’s final debate, and it’s sure to anger President Donald Trump. The Commission will allow the candidates’ microphones to be muted while their opponent is speaking, which is one of the reasons Trump gave for pulling out of last week’s virtual debate.

“As in the first debate, each candidate will be allotted two minutes of speaking time to initially answer the moderator’s questions,” The New York Times reports. “But under a plan being finalized by the commission on Monday, his opponent’s microphone would be turned off during that period, an attempt to ensure an uninterrupted response.”

Explaining why participating in a virtual debate would be “a waste of time” for him, Trump last week specifically said one of the reasons he wouldn’t is because moderators could “cut you off,” meaning cut his microphone off.

Trump has yet to react to the change in the rules.

Far Right House Republicans Urge Barr to Appoint Special Counsel to Investigate Joe Biden and Son Hunter

Published

Eleven of the most extreme House Republicans are urging Attorney General Bill Barr to investigate Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and the former Vice President’s son Hunter Biden.

Fox News reports the Republicans want Barr “to appoint a special counsel to investigate alleged revelations coming from a laptop purported to have belonged to Joe Biden’s son Hunter — specifically the elder Biden’s alleged participation in his son’s business dealings.”

The letter to the Attorney General is signed by just 11 of the 198 Republican Representatives, among them far right extremists like white supremacist Steve King of Iowa, white nationalist Louis Gohmert of Texas, religious extremist Jody Hice of Georgia, and science-denier Paul Gosar of Arizona.

Also among the 11 signatories, Congressman Andy Biggs, a “hydroxychloroquine kook” according to a local Arizona opinion writer, took to Twitter to attack Biden.

The allegations against the Bidens, fueled by a NY Post article being called Russian disinformation and based on content provided by President Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, have been debunked from the start.

Trump is attacking Barr for not having already opened an investigation into the Bidens.

Should Barr cave and open an investigation it would not be the first politically-motivated attack on Bidem from Republicans. Last month Senate Republicans ended an investigation that “found no evidence of improper influence or wrongdoing by the former vice president, closing out an inquiry its leaders had hoped would tarnish the Democratic presidential nominee.”

Trump Delivers Closing Pitch to ‘Suburban Housewives’ at Rally: ‘Women, I Like Women — I Like Women!’

Published

on

President Donald J. Trump made his closing pitch to who he called “suburban housewives” at his Arizona rally Monday. He bellowed, “Women, I like women — I like women!” in a classic Trumpian move while his supporters cheered.

“Listen, here’s the story. They said ‘suburban women’ — I used to call them ‘suburban housewives,’ I got killed all the time. I said, ‘ugh, I better go politically correct.’ Is there one woman here who minds being called, if you’re married at least, a ‘suburban housewife’ ’cause…”

The crowd erupted with “No!”

“The only ones who mind are those characters… there’s a lot of people up there – the press, right? Those are the only ones. The rest of them don’t.”
