Democratic Candidate Apologizes for Comments in Support of Nancy Reagan
Hillary Clinton says she is sorry about comments she made Friday afternoon praising what she said was the late Nancy Reagan’s “low-key advocacy” for HIV/AIDS.Â
“While the Reagans were strong advocates for stem cell research and finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, I misspoke about their record on HIV and AIDS,” the former Secretary of State said in a statement sent to The New Civil Rights Movement. “For that, I’m sorry.”
Earlier, she had said that “because of President and Mrs. Reagan – in particular Mrs. Reagan – we started a national converation, when before, nobody would talk about it, nobody wanted to do anything about it,” Clinton said about HIV/AIDS. “That too is something that I really appreciate, with her very effective low-key advocacy. But it penetrated the public conscience, and people began to say, ‘Hey, we have to do something about this too.'”
Many, hurt and upset by the remarks, took to social media.
