MSNBC Host Walks Off After Weeks of Pointless Pre-Emptions and No Communication
Melissa Harris Perry doesn’t know if she’s been canceled. For the past few weeks, and other times over the past few months, her weekend MSNBC political and cultural talk show without any particular reason, just has not been on. No guest host, just no “Melissa Harris Perry” show.
The Wake Forest University professor, civil rights activist and MSNBC host has now walked off, and is refusing to do her show this weekend.Â
“Here is the reality: Our show was taken — without comment or discussion or notice — in the midst of an election season,†Harris-Perry wrote in an email, the New York Times reports. “After four years of building an audience, developing a brand and developing trust with our viewers, we were effectively and utterly silenced.â€
“I will not be used as a tool for their purposes,†Harris-Perry continued. “I am not a token, mammy, or little brown bobble head. I am not owned by Lack, Griffin or MSNBC,†she said, referring to the heads of NBC News and MSNBC, respectively.
“I love our show. I want it back.â€
In an interview with The New York Times, Harris-Perry said, “I don’t know if there is a personal racial component,†adding, “I don’t think anyone is doing something mean to me because I’m a black person.â€
The Times reports Harris-Perry “said she had received no word about whether her show, which runs from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays and Sundays, had been canceled, but said she was frustrated that her time slot had faced pre-emptions for coverage of the presidential election. She said she had not appeared on the network at all ‘for weeks’ and that she was mostly sidelined during recent election coverage in South Carolina and New Hampshire.”
Harris-Perry’s full email, which is addressed to her staff, has just been published to Medium by her former producer, Jamil Smith.
“Putting me on air seems to be a decision being made solely to save face because there is a growing chorus of questions from our viewers about my notable absence from MSNBC coverage,” Harris-Perry writes. “Social media has noted the dramatic change in editorial tone and racial composition of MSNBC’s on-air coverage. In addition, Dylan Byers of CNN has made repeated inquiries with MSNBC’s leadership and with me about the show and what appears to be its cancellation. I have not responded to reporters or social media inquiries. However, I am not willing to appear on air in order to quell concerns about the disappearance of our show and our voice.”
I have stayed in the same hotels where MSNBC has been broadcasting in Iowa, in New Hampshire, and in South Carolina, yet I have been shut out from coverage. I have a PhD in political science and have taught American voting and elections at some of the nation’s top universities for nearly two decades, yet I have been deemed less worthy to weigh in than relative novices and certified liars. I have hosted a weekly program on this network for four years and contributed to election coverage on this network for nearly eight years, but no one on the third floor has even returned an email, called me, or initiated or responded to any communication of any kind from me for nearly a month. It is profoundly hurtful to realize that I work for people who find my considerable expertise and editorial judgment valueless to the coverage they are creating.
While MSNBC may believe that I am worthless, I know better. I know who I am. I know why MHP Show is unique and valuable. I will not sell short myself or this show. I am not hungry for empty airtime. I care only about substantive, meaningful, and autonomous work. When we can do that, I will return — not a moment earlier. I am deeply sorry for the ways that this decision makes life harder for all of you. You mean more to me than you can imagine.
In treating an amazing talent like Melissa Harris-Perry in this manner, MSNBC is revealing just how little respect it has not only for  an incredible journalist and host, but for its viewers. The flailing “Place for Politics” has been an embarrassment for years, and ever since Comcast took over NBC, MSNBC has grown increasingly conservative.
The formerly liberal network has allowed incessant rumors about its only Emmy-award winning host, Chris Hayes, to continue without end, rumors that Hayes will be fired over ratings concerns. In the mean time, Hayes every day delivers some of the best and most intelligent coverage on any network in the U.S., yet is treated like trash. A few days ago, without explanation, Hayes was anchoring MSNBC’s 4:00 PM hour.
MSNBC continues to allow its morning team of Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski to fawn and literally hang out with Donald Trump, as the “news” network literally fawns over him as well. Several weeks ago, Chris Matthews hosted a one-hour Trump love fest that boggled the mind.
Last month, the otherwise excellent MSNBC anchor Tamron Hall was allowed to call the Oregon occupiers “citizen activists,” as opposed to “militiamen,” or even “domestic terrorists.
And MSNBC has continued to provide a platform to leaders and spokespersons of known hate groups.
MSNBC is not the network that progressives, liberals, and Democrats need or deserve, and, sadly, it’s increasingly clear it has no intention to be.
UPDATE I –
NBC News – not MSNBC – gave the Times a statement:
“In this exciting and unpredictable presidential primary season, many of our daytime programs have been temporarily upended by breaking political coverage, including M.H.P. This reaction is really surprising, confusing and disappointing.â€
Way to apologize and stand by your talent.

This tweet from Buzzfeed’s Legal Editor Chris Geidner says it all:

Here’s the tweet Geidner links to:
— Rick Tyler (@rickwtyler) February 26, 2016
And who is Rick Tyler? Ted Cruz’s unscrupulous former, and now fired, communications director. I once wrote an open letter lambasting him for disgustingly twisting Cruz’s positions on same-sex marriage. Cruz, of course, fired him for posting a video that claimed Marco Rubio had disparaged the Bible, contributing to the increasingly loud cries that Cruz is a liar and condoning dirty tricks.
So, of course MSNBC hired him, immediately.
CNN’s Brian Stelter, who reports on the media, posted this tweet:
Look, I’m a direct time slot competitor. But MHP is one of a kind. A tenured prof TV host! I profiled her in 2012: https://t.co/zs2OYvJMLh

Joy Reid lost her show. Karen Finney had a short stint. Now MHP? Meanwhile, prodigal son Brian Williams is back in the fold. #nerdland

Trump Urged Ukraine President ‘About Eight Times’ to Work With Giuliani to Get Dirt on Biden’s Son: WSJ
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that President Donald Trump “repeatedly pressured” the president of Ukraine to work with his personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, to get dirt on the son of his top political opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden.
In a July phone call Trump urged President Volodymyr Zelensky “about eight times to work with Rudy Giuliani,” the Wall Street Journal says.
But the Journal’s reporting in the second paragraph offers details that appear to minimize what experts have been suggesting actually happened. The Journal’s report also does not name sources or even suggest if they are White House or intelligence community officials.
“Mr. Trump didn’t mention a provision of foreign aid to Ukraine on the call, said this person, who didn’t believe Mr. Trump offered the Ukrainian president any quid-pro-quo for his cooperation on an investigation,” the Journal says.
That would lessen the magnitude of the allegations against President Trump, although they would still be impeachable offenses.
The Trump team has become expert at controlling the national conversation and forging a narrative that bends most elements of truth, then getting the conservative base to believe them.
This is a breaking news and developing story. Details may change. This story will be updated, and NCRM will likely publish follow-up stories on this news. Stay tuned and refresh for updates.
Some Among Democratic Base Grow Increasingly Frustrated as Pelosi Issues Statement Chastising Trump Over Whistleblower
Statement Does Not Say ‘Impeachment’
Some among the Democratic base appear frustrated with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi who has not been supportive of the majority of House Democrats who want to impeach President Donald Trump. Friday afternoon the Speaker quietly issued a lengthy statement responding to the bombshell news that a whistleblower has filed a “credible” and “urgent” complaint with the intelligence community.
Pelosi’s statement, which was not posted to her social media accounts as of this writing, made its way through Twitter via a handful of reporters.
“If the President has done what has been alleged, then he is stepping into a dangerous minefield with serious repercussions for his Administration and our democracy,” Pelosi said, as a Politico congressional reporter pointed out:

Nearly two-thirds of House Democrats support impeaching Trump, or beginning a formal impeachment inquiry at the very least, according to Politico. But the majority of the nation does not, nor do a majority of Democratic voters, according to recent polls.
“Only 37 percent support beginning impeachment proceedings, while half oppose it,” Politco reports, citing its own polls.
Speaker Pelosi’s statement concludes with this:
“We will continue to follow the facts and explore every possible option to ensure the American people get the truth. We would hope that Republicans would join us in supporting the Constitution.”
Some online are calling her statement “weak,” while others are disappointed with the lack of specific threats of action, and others are expressing exasperation with the Speaker not supporting impeachment:
Weak as usual @TeamPelosi . Trump has clearly crossed the impeachment line with this one.
— Peter Archer (@PeterArcher37) September 20, 2019
With all due respect @SpeakerPelosi , when is enough enough? What repercussions has this administration faced so far under a Democratic House majority?
— PhatboyNYC (@PhatboyNYC) September 20, 2019
And this is why Dems are perceived as weak and Trump looks like a winner. Pathetic. If Pelosi et al don’t get it together soon, they will cost Democrats big time by depressing the vote.
— Debra King (@Kingwoman) September 20, 2019
Weak sauce from Pelosi. I’ll believe it when some damn ACTION is taken.
— Van Hammersly (@MrVanHammersly) September 20, 2019
Suggestion for Sunday shows: Invite Speaker Pelosi and ask her what would merit impeachment? Is there a red line somewhere, or is impeachment something from the past that shall never be sought again, ever?
— Jorge Guajardo (@jorge_guajardo) September 20, 2019
Speaker Pelosi has issued a statement warning of serious, unnamed, repercussions. In other words, nothing. This still does not seem to be enough to make them act.
— Regina Maher (@Regina_Maher) September 20, 2019
You hear that Trump? You only have 100 more scandals before Pelosi pounces…on another mildly written statement of concern. Wouldn’t wanna be in your shoes.
— Kenneth Jimenez (@MrKennyJimenez) September 20, 2019
Here it is. Pelosi apparently feels like she’s done her job. No mention of impeachment. Absolutely no consequences for this administration. What is it going to take? pic.twitter.com/Va3cyFAmjz

DId you read Pelosi’s “statement”, It makes you want to go back to bed, pull the covers over your head and sob for the loss of our country and soon democracy as a concept. I have a headache.
— hfb (@HarrietBurandt) September 20, 2019
After a week has passed, at last a statement…that advances the effort to secure the complaint in no concrete way. https://t.co/IXDbbzv8h3
— Brian Beutler (@brianbeutler) September 20, 2019
Incredibly I think Pelosi has already blown it with this statement. You have a tiny window of time in which to cement the narrative in the public discussion that this warrants impeachment and she just watched it pass. Now this will just fade into the miasma of Trump crimes.
— Jeff Rector (@jrector83) September 20, 2019
I just read Pelosi’s statement on the whistleblower. I want to throw my phone across the Fucking room. WTF??

WATCH: Trump Says He Hasn’t Read Whistleblower Complaint – in Next Breath Claims ‘Everybody’s Read It, They Laugh at It’
President Donald Trump has spent a good part of the day trying to minimize the news about a reportedly damning whistleblower complaint filed against him by an intelligence official. During an Oval Office press availability Trump threw many different claims at reporters, claiming both that he had no idea what was in the complaint or which country’s leader it involved, then claimed his conversation with the country’s leader was “great” and “beautiful.”
Minutes later he was asked again about the whistleblower report, and if he had read it.
“No I haven’t,” Trump replied.
“It’s – I, I just tell you it is – everybody’s read it, they laugh at it,” Trump said, making a face as if to denigrate the report.
It’s unclear who “everybody” is, but if it to have been even widely distributed Congress would need to investigate, given only the Director of National Intelligence and the IG should have access to it.
He went on to call it “another media disaster,” despite the intelligence community inspector general – who he appointed – calling the whistleblower complaint both “credible” and “urgent.”
