Guess Who the Gun’s Manufacturer Used to Make Weapons For?

Jeb! just can’t catch a break. 

Having finally resorted to allowing his brother, former President George W. Bush, to stump for him in South Carolina, Jeb sounded revived.

In fact, Jeb delivered a powerful speech on Monday, after his brother introduced him. The former Florida governor proudly told his supporters that under his watch, 80,000 public school children were allowed to enroll in private Christian schools, and on the taxpayers’ dime.

Today, apparently feeling like a new man, Gov. Bush tweeted this photo on a gun with his name engraved on it, and a single, one-word caption: “America.”

When asked about it, he seemed surprised, but then recovered quickly:

Sadly for Jeb, the gun manufacturer is a subsidiary of a company based in Belgium. 

Oops.

It gets worse.

“While the company is known as FN America, it is actually a subsidiary of FN Herstal, a foreign corporation based in Belgium. And for decades, the company was known as Fabrique Nationale d’Armes de Guerre,” the Washington Post’s T. Rees Shapiro writes, offering some background:

During World War II, the company was requisitioned by the Nazi military and its factories produced thousands of weapons for Axis troops, including pistols carried by Nazi officers and pilots. One model, the Browning-designed Hi-Power, was used by both the Allies and Axis powers during the war, with FN factories manufacturing a version of the popular handgun for the German military.

Oops.

Fortunately, that was decades ago, and at least FN America also now makes guns for U.S. troops.
