Despite facing impending contempt of court charges and a Supreme Court that refuses to intervene, Kim Davis is holding on tight.Â
Kim Davis knows she doesn’t have the backing of the U.S. Supreme Court, nor, likely, the Rowan County Attorney who advanced a charge of official misconduct to the state attorney general last week. But she does have the support of the voters, and since the office of county clerk is an elected position, one that she, like her mother before her, have held for decades, the chances of her resigning are slim.
In fact, so slim that Kim Davis just told reporters she has no intention of quitting.
“I intend to continue to serve,†she said today.
Davis also just issued a statement suggesting she believes she will go to hell if she disobeys what she sees as God’s law on marriage.
“To issue a marriage license which conflicts with God’s definition of marriage, with my name affixed to the certificate, would violate my conscience. It is not a light issue for me. It is a Heaven or Hell decision. For me it is a decision of obedience,” Davis says.
“I owe my life to Jesus Christ who loves me and gave His life for me. Following the death of my godly mother-in-law over four years ago, I went to church to fulfill her dying wish. There I heard a message of grace and forgiveness and surrendered my life to Jesus Christ.”
She also insists she has “no animosity toward anyone and harbor no ill will.”
“To me this has never been a gay or lesbian issue. It is about marriage and God’s Word. It is a matter of religious liberty, which is protected under the First Amendment, the Kentucky Constitution, and in the Kentucky Religious Freedom Restoration Act.”
The only way Davis can be “fired” is during an election, if she loses, or if the state legislature impeaches her, finds her guilty, and removes her from office. The legislature is not scheduled to convene until January of next year.
And given that this is Kentucky, and she has the support of a great many Kentucky citizens, even that may not bring her career to an end.
You’ll remember Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore, who was impeached and removed from office in 2003, only to run again for election in 2012? Today, he is, again, the Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court.
