UPDATED: Couples Ask Judge To Hold Kim Davis In Contempt Of Court, Impose Fines But Not Jail

Kentucky couples who are involved in a lawsuit against Kim Davis are now asking a federal judge to take action against her.

Last night the Supreme Court refused Kim Davis’ request to place a stay on a federal judge’s order instructing her to begin issuing marriage licenses to all couples regardless of gender. This morning at 8:00 AM Davis, the Rowan County clerk, refused two same-sex couples amid a roomful of protestors.

Now, those couples have filed a motion with U.S. District Judge David Bunning, asking him to hold Kim Davis in contempt of court. They specifically are asking him to impose fines against her, but to not jail her.

ACLU attorneys for the couples are smartly outmaneuvering Davis, by pre-empting what likely would have been her next move.

The motions (below, and  here, here, and here,) also ask the judge to ensure his ruling ordering Davis and her office to issue marriage licenses applies to all couples, not just the ones who brought the lawsuit.

UPDATE I: 11:15 AM EDT –

Contempt hearing not until Thursday.
