Alleged Dallas BBQ Gay Hate Attack Chair Basher Surrenders To Police
The man accused of bashing two gay men with a chair in a Chelsea, New York City restaurant has finally surrendered.
Cinco de Mayo was an especially dramatic evening for diners at a local barbecue chain in Manhattan’s gay-friendly Chelsea neighborhood. Jonathan Snipes was dining with his boyfriend, Ethan York-Adams, and in a rush to leave, spilled a drink.
That’s when things got crazy.
Snipes says a man called the couple “white faggots,” and when he went to talk to him, he says the man turned violent.
Captured on video is what happened after, when the man, whom police say is a “career criminal” named Bayna El-Amin, got up and smashed both men with a wooden chair.
More than a month later, he is in police custody.
“Bayna-Lehkiem El-Amin, 41, surrendered to NYPD Hate Crime detectives at the Seventh Precinct and was being questioned Tuesday, the sources said. He was charged with assault and attempted assault,” the New York Daily News reports.
El-Amin is “reportedly gay and has 18 previous arrests in numerous states for assault, credit-card fraud, possession of stolen property, and forgery,” according to Gothamist, which adds that he “told the blog G List Society earlier this month that the men he assaulted, Jonathan Snipes and his boyfriend, Ethan York-Adams, actually started the fight.”
El-Amin claims that Snipes and York-Adams were fighting, and that he shouted “Hey, guys! There are ladies here,” to get them to stop. Instead, El-Amin alleges, Snipes struck him with a “heavy blunt object,” and that he merely retaliated with a chair.Â
“He assaulted me,” El-Amin told G List Society. “I was the victim.”
The victims at the time of the attack said they refused medical attention for lack of insurance.
