Tweet Of The Day: @POTUS
President Obama sends an historic tweet.
If you were thinking Barack Obama has been tweeting for years, yes, it’s true, but today President Obama sent his first tweet – from his new @POTUS Twitter account.
Hello, Twitter! It’s Barack. Really! Six years in, they’re finally giving me my own account.
— President Obama (@POTUS) May 18, 2015
Someone’s going to have to break it to him that he doesn’t get to keep the account when he leaves office…
In just 45 minutes the tweet has been retweeted almost 42,000 times and favorited almost 43,000 times.
“The @POTUS Twitter account will serve as a new way for President Obama to engage directly with the American people, with tweets coming exclusively from him,” the White House blog notes. “President Obama is committed to making his Administration the most open and participatory in history, and @POTUS will give Americans a new venue to engage on the issues that matter most to them.”
First Lady Michelle Obama has had her @FLOTUS account for years, as has Vice President Joe Biden, @VP.
There is an official public list of White House Twitter accounts which you can follow.
