Ben Carson: Gays Are More Protected Than Christians (Video)

Ben Carson strongly suggests that Christians are persecuted, and gay people are more protected than Christians and other people of faith. Let’s unpack just how ridiculous that is.

Retired neurosurgeon and likely 2016 Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson once again sat down with CNN’s Chris Cuomo and debated civil rights for the LGBT community Thursday morning. A far more demure and reserved Carson attempted to keep his promise to not discuss LGBT issues, but was soon overcome by Cuomo’s questioning, including the reminded that as president he would not get to “pick and choose” which topic he wanted to discuss.

In the video above, Carson tells Cuomo that a “person’s sexual orientation” is a topic that is “a fair amount of concern to you,” adding, “I don’t find it to be anywhere as interesting.”

The 2008 Presidential Medal of Freedom award winner added, “I think it’s a personal issue, and we ought to leave it as a personal issue.” That position is the same espoused by many anti-LGBT activists and organizations, who believe that, for example, a gay person talking with their co-workers about their weekend is “jamming their sexuality down our throats,” but a straight person talking with their co-workers about their weekend is just talking.

“I respect the LGBT community,” Carson said, all evidence to the contrary, including his claim that prison is proof that being gay is a choice. “I respect the traditional marriage community,” he added. “Leave it to the personal, issues, to the personal people.”

Cuomo reminded Dr. Carson that the LGBT community doesn’t have the same rights and the U.S. Supreme Court will soon be taking up marriage.

“I would like to see as much emphasis on the rights of Christians and people who are members of the faith community as there is to some of the other groups,” said Carson, who two weeks ago called the Indiana “religious freedom” law “absolutely vital.” 

Asked, “Who gets more protection? Christians? Or LGBT people under the law?

“I would like to see a much greater conservation about Christians and their rights,” Carson responded. “Why are we not talking about that?,” he accused Cuomo.

“I think we are right now, doctor” Cuomo said. “The LGBT community gets far less legal protection, under the Constitution, as you know—”

“No, not as I know,” Carson objected, smirking.

“How do you not know that?” Cuomo asked. “A protected class is religion, not LGBT.”

In most states, only recently, same-sex couples can now marry. But in most states, the moment they put their wedding photo on their desk they can be fired for being gay. Dr. Carson cannot possibly be unaware of that fact.

Carson then went down the Republican rabbit hole.

“The important thing is for us as a nation to recognize that all citizens of the United States are protected by our Constitution,” Carson said. “We need to stop deciding that one group versus another is the flavor of the day.”

The former pediatric neurosurgeon, author of six bestselling Christian books, and accused plagiarist, then said that he disagreed with Barack Obama – whom he recently called a “psychopath“ – over the President’s call last night to ban harmful “ex-gay” therapy for minors. Carson said it should be a personal decision.

Carson in the past has equated homosexuality with bestiality and pedophilia.
