Jeb Bush Releases New Statement After Being Pilloried For Same-Sex Marriage Comments
Republican Jeb Bush apparently didn’t like how the media responded to his comments yesterday about same-sex marriage, so he threw them some new ones.
Democrats were right about Mitt Romney being a flip-flopper, but they need to dig up that moniker and use it on Jeb Bush too.Â
In an earlier report today, NCRM detailed the comments Jeb Bush, a highly-likely GOP presidential candidate, made about same-sex marriage, which began today in his home state of Florida.
“It ought be a local decision. I mean, a state decision,†Bush said Sunday. “The state decided. The people of the state decided. But it’s been overturned by the courts, I guess.â€
That statement was broadly panned by those on the left, and merely opened the door for media outlets, including NCRM, to remind readers of his earlier comments on same-sex marriage and the LGBT community. Among them, that he has said same-sex couple’s relationships should not be given equal status as different-sex couples’.
Not happy with the headlines, Bush talked to the New York Times, which early this evening published the former GOP governor’s latest attempt to shape his message into something palatable for the 21st century.
“We live in a democracy, and regardless of our disagreements, we have to respect the rule of law,†Mr. Bush said in a statement. “I hope that we can show respect for the good people on all sides of the gay and lesbian marriage issue – including couples making lifetime commitments to each other who are seeking greater legal protections and those of us who believe marriage is a sacrament and want to safeguard religious liberty.â€
Note the careful crafting: against same-sex marriage but in a kinder, gentler way. Religion and “religious liberty” included.
This is what voters will be subjected to for the next 22 months: A candidate desperate to please and to be understood, taking up the people’s time to get his message out over and over again, in different forms until someone applauds it.
Jeb Bush is like a corporate-created product that’s in the middle of a consumer focus group, looking for some sign of “like.”
