Gordon Klingenschmitt says this year’s election was a response by voters against judges who struck down same-sex marriage bans.
A former Navy chaplain, Gordon Klingenschmitt is a Christian exorcist who claims to literally have prayed the gay away, and who even claims to have performed an exorcism on President Barack Obama. He says this year’s election, which landed him a seat in the Colorado House of Representatives, was a “repudiation” by voters of the “judicial tyranny” imposed on them by judges stricking down same-sex marriage bans.
Klingenschmitt has slowly grown his name-recognition. After he left the Navy in a controversy surrounding wearing his military uniform during a political protest, Klingenschmitt started the Pray in Jesus Name ministry, in which he routined speaks against homosexuality.

Yesterday, appearing far less his usual extremist self, Klingenschmitt talked with veteran progressive journalist David Pakman, who reminded him that he has repeatedly said gay people are going to hell. “Can you take seriously, as Speaker of the House, someone who is as you describe openly-gay?,” Pakman asked. “How could you work with someone like that?”
“As an elected official,” Klingenschmitt said, “I will probably tone down the rhetoric.”
The former Navy pastor also tried to use an audio recording he said was of a death threat made against him as evidence the LGBT community is violent and hostile.
“There’s this impression in the public that the gay movement is all ‘tolerant’ and ‘friendly,’ and we’re the haters. They accuse Christians,” Klingenschmitt said, “we are labeled bigots and phobias… by activists who are dishonest.”
Klingenschmitt reminded the audience too that he won with 70 percent of the vote in a district that is only 43 percent registered Republicans.
Makes you wonder how many Democrats stayed home.
