NOM Spending Thousands Of Dollars Robocalling Against Gay Republicans
NOM, the National Organization For Marriage, has disclosed it has spent thousands of dollars on robocalls attacking gay Republican candidates.
NOM has spent over $4000 on robocalls attacking two gay Republican congressional candidates, and is also spending cash attacking a Republican congressional candidate who is not gay but supports same-sex marriage.
“NOM reported it spent more than $2,000 each on calls opposing GOP candidates Carl DeMaio in the California 52nd and Richard Tisei in the Massachusetts 6th. DeMaio and Tisei are both openly gay and support same-sex marriage,” Talking Points Memo reports.
The group is also spending money on calls against Oregon GOP Senate candidate Monica Wehby, who announced her support for gay marriage last month.
There is no known record of what was said on the robocalls.
NOM also co-signed a letter sent to Speaker of the House John Boehner, along with the National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee, Members of the Republican Majority Leadership, Senator Mitch McConnell and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. That letter was also signed by FRC Action, an arm of the certified anti-gay hate group Family Research Council, and signed by CitizenLink, an arm of the virulently anti-gay group, Focus on the Family.
The letter bluntly states the groups “actively oppose the election” of Tisei, DeMaio, and Wehby and promises they “will mount a concerted effort to urge voters to refuse to cast ballots for them in the November election.” It also states the three are “antithetical to the Republican platform.”
“We cannot in good conscience urge our members and fellow citizens to support candidates like DeMaio, Tisei or Wehby,” the letter adds. “They are wrong on critical, foundational issues of importance to the American people. Worse, as occupants of high office they will secure a platform in the media to advance their flawed ideology and serve as terrible role models for young people who will inevitably be encouraged to emulate them.”
