Fired NFL Punter Chris Kluwe And Vikings Reach Settlement Over Discrimination
Chris Kluwe and the Minnesota Vikings have reached a settlement over the star punter’s firing and an alleged culture of anti-LGBT discrimination.Â
Chris Kluwe and his former employer have reportedly come to a settlement. The former Minnesota Viking punter had threatened to sue the Vikings over his claims of discrimination.
Kluwe alleged he was fired for his support of the LGBT community and same-sex marriage.Â
The Associated Press reports “Kluwe vowed to sue because he was unhappy with the team’s resolution of his complaint against special teams coordinator Mike Priefer for alleged anti-gay slurs.”
The team and Kluwe’s attorneys returned to the negotiation table, which delayed the filing of a lawsuit. On Friday, Kluwe and his attorneys said that an agreement was reached.
No details of the settlement were made available.
CBS Sports adds that “Kluwe wrote in a Deadspin piece last January that special teams coach Mike Priefer had made gay slurs at him, and this past summer, Kluwe said he was planning to sue the team for $10 million for defamation of character and emotional distress if the organization didn’t punish Priefer.”
Eventually, Priefer was suspended for three games, and on Friday, Kluwe’s lawyer told media outlets that his client and the Vikings had reached a settlement.
