With Just Hours To Go, England And Wales Excited For First Same-Sex Marriages (Photos!)
Just past the stroke of midnight across England and Wales, same-sex couples will begin marrying — and it seems all people across the land are excited. Rainbow flags are being hoisted atop Whitehall — the center of Her Majesty’s government, and are flying on government buildings, including in Centenary Square, the Islington, Brighton and Hove town halls. The London Evening Standard is flouting a rainbowed logo, and even ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s is joining in, celebrating same-sex marriage with their new marriage equality flavor, Apple-y Ever After.
Prime Minister David Cameron, a conservative who led the way for same-sex marriage in England, issued a statement saying that marking “marriage available to everyone goes beyond individual relationships, proposals and weddings – it says something deeper too about the sort of country we are.”
This is a country with proud traditions of tolerance, respect and equal worth. With this reform we are being true to those values.
In turn we are sending a powerful message to young people growing up who are uncertain about their sexuality: we are telling them that they are equal.
Same-sex couples in England and Wales can marry just past the stroke of midnight Saturday morning, which, form those in the U.S., is 8:00 PM EDT.
Congratulations!
