Fascinating: Rachel Maddow’s Deep Investigation Offers Most Plausible Bridgegate Explanation

Last night, Rachel Maddow did what she does best: deep investigation and laying out the big picture — the bigger picture — asking questions about what really happened to cause Bridgegate.

And her reporting is fascinating.

Why should you care? Because Chris Christie, perhaps up until this week, could have been the 2016 Republican presidential nominee. He still could be. And the idea of a President Christie should make us all want to run for the hills — or to Canada.

Maddow offers a far more plausible and sensible explanation than what the media have been saying.

Maddow looks at the emails, and finds the one where now-fired Christie aide Bridget Kelly promises “to unleash hell on Fort Lee.”

Mediaite offers the synopsis:

In 2010, Christie took the unprecedented step of refusing to reappoint a New Jersey Supreme Court justice for another term, which set off the New Jersey Democrats, who got back at Christie by shooting down all the other Supreme Court justice nominees he put forward.

So when a Republican member of the New Jersey Supreme Court came up for reappointment last year, NJ Senate Democrats promised to make it a brutal fight, so Christie decided to stop the reappointment. He was furious at Senate Democrats, and held a press conference getting really angry with them.

That press conference, expressing much anger with Senate Democrats, was held on August 12, 2013, a day before the Bridgegate e-mail was sent. And Fort Lee, the town that got backed up, is part of the legislative district represented by Loretta Weinberg. The leader of the Senate Democrats.

Makes far more sense, especially if you watch the entire Maddow report below.

If you’re pressed for time, start at the 11:00 minute mark, but watch:

Dozens of House Republicans Refusing to Wear Masks March to Senate Side for ‘Taste of Freedom’

Published

After falsely blaming Speaker Nancy Pelosi for the newly-announced mask mandate on the House side of Congress, dozens of Republicans Thursday afternoon engaged in a performative protest, not against the coronavirus but against efforts to end the pandemic. What appeared to be 50 or so House GOP  lawmakers marched over to the Senate side of the Capitol Hill building for what one called a “taste of freedom.”

The Attending Physician of the United States Congress, following updated CDC guidance this week ordered anyone on the House side of the Capitol to wear a mask if in a group, regardless of vaccination status, but did not make the same order for the Senate side.

While Dr. Brian Monahan did not explain why the rules were different, at last cxount only about half of the Republicans on the House side have said they are vaccinated. Almost every Republican on the Senate side is. All Democrats on both sides are fully vaccinated. Dr. Monahan’s office announced fines and possible removal for repeat offenders.

Among those in the maskless pack making their way to the Senate side were Reps. Madison Cawthorn, Lauren Boebert, Louie Gohmert, Paul Gosar, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Chip Roy.

Far Right Republican Concocts Fundraising Scheme to Bail Out Mask Rule-Breakers — but the Cash Goes to His Campaign

Published

Right-wing Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) is asking for donations so that he can pay for the fines for Congressional members and their staff who refuse to wear a mask in the Capitol. But when clicking the link to donate, it takes you to his campaign page.

Typical members of Congress are paid $174,000 annually, so it’s unclear why they would need donations to cover their own rule-breaking. Staffers certainly make much less, however, Washington, D.C. has mandated face masks in public places again. So, they would be in violation of the Capitol rules as well as D.C. rules. It’s unclear if their Republican members would be willing to pay their fees themselves if the staffer follows their boss’s lead.

While the Capitol has instituted fines, the Capitol Police released a statement that seemed like a veiled threat to those anti-maskers refusing to follow the rules.

“Regarding the House mask rule, there is no reason it should ever come to someone being arrested. Anyone who does not follow the rule will be asked to wear a mask or leave the premises. The Department’s requirement for officers to wear masks is for their health and safety,” said the statement.

‘We’re in Marxist Territory’: Gaetz, Gohmert, and Greene Outraged for Being Blocked From Visiting Jan. 6 Defendants

Published

on

U.S. Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Louie Gohmert (R-TX), and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) staged a press conference immediately after being denied entry to a corrections facility allegedly holding defendants facing charges related to the January 6 insurrection.

“We’re in totalitarian, Marxist territory here. This is the way third-world people get treated,” Congressman Gohmert declared for the cameras.

The three far right Republicans delivered their remarks after a guard told them they were “trespassing” and “obstructing entrance into this facility.”

The videos above come from the far right website Right Side Broadcasting Network, which falsely deems the defendants “political prisoners” in its chyrons.

As the members of Congress spoke two protestors held up signs reading: “Where is due process” and “Free Biden’s political prisoners,” which is rhetoric similar to that made by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
