Why New Mexico Is On The Verge Of Becoming The Next Marriage Equality State

Editor’s note: Read our update — Breaking: Exclusive — 7 GOP Lawmakers Sue To Stop New Mexico Same-Sex Marriages

The implications of the latest news make it clear: New Mexico seems to be on the verge of becoming the next state to extend marriage to same-sex couples, and the way it’s getting there defies precedent. Now, all 31 country clerks — representing every county in the state — have joined a lawsuit and will file an appeal with the New Mexico state Supreme Court. If they win, same-sex marriage will be legal across the state. Currently, six different New Mexico counties are issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

The ball really got rolling just last week, when a Doña Ana, New Mexico county clerk, Lynn Ellins, began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, based on a Santa Fe City Council resolution and a recent statement by the state Attorney General. Ellins, who is also an attorney, said he could find no legal reason to not issue same-sex couples marriage licenses.

Then, one week ago today, a New Mexico district court judge ordered the clerk of Santa Fe County to immediately begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, or appear in her courtroom to explain the reason she shouldn’t. So, that brought the list to two counties.

This week, on Monday, a district court judge in Albuquerque ruled the state’s ban on same-sex marriage was “unconstitutional and unenforceable” and removed it from the county, Bernalillo, in which he had the authority to do so. That made three counties that were issuing licenses to same-sex couples.

By this point, hundreds of same-sex couples had been issued licenses and had married.

The following day, Tuesday, two more county clerks joined the list: Valencia County and San Miguel County, making five total. By Wednesday, the list grew to six, with the addition of Taos County.

All this, in a state where a May poll found 44 percent of the public supports same-sex marriage — far below the national average of about 53 percent, depending on the poll.

The good news for all these couples, too, is that legal experts deem their marriages as “just as married as anyone else,” and not in danger of being legally nullified if the courts later rule against same-sex marriage.

This truly grassroots revolution this month came “as fast as computer programs could be tweaked and marriage licenses could be printed sans the now-extraneous words of ‘male’ and ‘female,'” a front-page sotry in the Albuquerque Journal notes. “In these counties, brides- and grooms-to-be are now just plain ‘applicant.'”

Which is a beautiful word if you’ve waited for years to make your love legally binding.

And then, there was that one lonely guy Tuesday, standing on the fringe of Civic Plaza and a world that was changing under his feet, holding his neatly printed little sign that read: Marriage = 1 Man + 1 Woman.

That fuzzy math no longer computes in the most populous portions of New Mexico.

The other exceptionally strange development is the relative silence from “pro-family” and anti-gay hate groups — and the GOP. Of course, there was the usual National Organization For Marriage fundraising email, calling same-sex weddings in New Mexico a “marriage emergency,” and “lawless” — without actual explanation.

And while a group of state Republican lawmakers promised a week ago to file suit to end the issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples, apparently they have been too busy to do so. Or, perhaps the sheer lunacy of their poorly-chosen leader, William Sharer, who held up two gay Greek icons from the annals of history as proof marriage is meant for opposite-sex couples was just too much to bear — even for them.

Regardless, it seems that new Mexico is on a trajectory that will quickly make it the 14th state in the nation to embrace marriage equality, and the way they’re getting there is almost as beautiful as the result.

Treasury Dept. Finally Hands Over Six Years of Trump’s Tax Returns to Powerful House Committee

Published

The U.S. Dept. of the Treasury has finally handed over six years of Donald Trump’s tax returns, after the U.S, Supreme Court denied the ex-president’s request to block the document transfer. The powerful House Ways and Means Committee is now in receipt of all six years, according to a Wednesday afternoon report from CNN.

The returns are primarily from Trump’s time as president.

The Committee will need to work quickly, as Republicans will take over the House majority early next year, and the current Chairman, Richard Neal, will no longer serve in that role.

Republicans are expected to end any investigations into Donald Trump, including his tax returns, as they begin investigations into top GOP priorities: Hunter Biden’s laptop, the origin of the novel COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, and President Joe Biden’s withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan.

Trump Allies So Shaken by His White Supremacist Dinner a Top Campaign Aide Will Now ‘Be Present With Him at All Times’

Top allies of Donald Trump were so disturbed by his decision to have dinner with white supremacist Nick Fuentes last week that the ex-president and 2024 GOP candidate will now have a handler with him around the clock.

The Associated Press also reports the campaign has also changed the protocols for visitors and will start to vet guests who come to see Trump, after the few procedures in place allowed antisemite Kanye West to bring along three guests.

“In an acknowledgment of the severity of the backlash and an effort to prevent a repeat, Trump’s campaign is putting new protocols in place to ensure that those who meet with him are approved and fully vetted, according to people familiar with the plans who requested anonymity to share internal strategy,” the AP adds, revealing the campaign apparently does not trust the 76-year old ex-president to make decisions about who he should or should not spend time with.

The AP does not define “fully vetted,” but importantly the Trump White House had such a horrific track record of vetting nominees even GOP Senators were frustrated.

“The changes will include expediting a system, borrowed from Trump’s White House, in which a senior campaign official will be present with him at all times, according to one of the people,” the AP adds, revealing what appears to be a previously unknown fact.

The lax security at Mar-a-Lago was in place when Trump was storing 300 documents with various classified markings, including documents with top secret information and a set with the highest level of classification.

In yet another stunning revelation the AP reports that the antisemitic Holocaust “denier” and white supremacist Fuentes “arrived by car with Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, and was waved into the club by security, even though only Ye had been on the security list, according to one of the people present and others briefed on the events.”

The AP also reports that “Fuentes apparently did not show his ID and the car’s driver, a frequent guest at the club, got in using a credit card after misplacing her license.”

The report does not mention the other two guests Trump dined with, reportedly far right wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos, who has supported adult men having sex with young teens, and Karen Trump 2016 aide Karen Giorno, who was reportedly involved in a pay-for-pardon scheme.

RIGHT WING EXTREMISM

Charlie Kirk, Purveyor of ‘Rigged’ Election Lie, Complains GOP Lost ‘Because a Lot of People Do Not Trust the System’

Published

Far right wing activist Charlie Kirk complained on Steve Bannon’s “War Room” show Tuesday that many Republicans in Arizona lost their elections earlier this month because they “do not trust” the election system. Kirk is a purveyor of Donald Trump’s “Big Lie,” and has repeatedly promoted the false claim that U.S. elections are “rigged.”

“400,000 people that showed up for Donald Trump or voted for Donald Trump in 2020 did not show up or vote for the midterm election,” Kirk told his audience. (NCRM has not verified these numbers and could find nothing to support the claim.)

“Now, I believe it’s because a lot of people do not trust the system,” Kirk claimed.

Why does Charlie Kirk believe “a lot of people do not trust the system”?

Because he told them not to. Over and over and over again.

In January on his show Kirk hosted Mollie Hemingway, the editor in chief of The Federalist, a right wing website founded by Ben Domenech and Sean Davis. The Federalist has been a purveyor of false election claims, according to Reuters, which reports the claims “are presented inaccurately.” Twitter had to append a “cautionary label” to a Federalist tweet after The Federalist wrongly stated, “Yes, Democrats Are Trying To Steal The Election In Michigan, Wisconsin, And Pennsylvania,” according to The Daily Beast.

Hemingway is also the author of the book, “Rigged: How the Media, Big Tech, and the Democrats Seized Our Elections.”

The title of that episode of The Charlie Kirk Show? “Why Conservatives Can’t Turn Our Backs on Rigged Elections with Mollie Hemingway.”

(The Federalist was also cited by The New England Journal of Medicine for belong create a “superspreader” event of false information about the effectiveness of masks in the fight against COVID-19.)

In April Kirk hosted right wing activist David Bossie, president of the political lobbying group Citizens United, and a former Trump 2016 campaign official.

‘RIGGED’ — An In-Depth Examination of the 2020 Election with David Bossie

Kirk likes the word “rigged.” On Twitter he’s used it a lot to suggest that the U.S. elections are “rigged.”

“The same people who spent the last 4 years falsely saying Russians rigged our elections are now saying there’s no way an election could be rigged by illegal ballots and voter fraud. How does that work?” (Nov 6, 2020)

“BREAKING: A mail carrier was just charged with attempted election fraud after changing party affiliations on mail-in ballots Still think there aren’t any issues with rigged elections due to mail-in voting? RT so the media has to report on the DANGERS of mail-in voter FRAUD!” (Apr 16, 2020)

“Democrats should be livid. This is a rigged game to protect the ruling class Thank goodness the GOP is a true grassroots party where ANY voice or person can win Democrats corruption will not allow fair or free elections” (Feb 4, 2020)

Or this tweet from 2019.

On November 9, this was the opening of a New York Times article.

“On the morning of Election Day, Charlie Kirk, the conservative talk show host from Arizona, shared a video on Twitter about broken voting machines in Maricopa County, followed by a series of posts suggesting that the problems were intentional,” The Times’ Sheera Frenkel and Steven Lee Myers wrote. “’This is manufactured chaos,’ he wrote, calling for those responsible to be arrested.”

“The video was shared nearly 20,000 times and liked by more than 30,000 users, including many prominent accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers. The post and others like it on a dozen online platforms kindled a false narrative of widespread voting shenanigans among those predisposed to believe that the country’s elections are rigged.”

In addition to hosting his talk show, Kirk is also the founder of right wing student activist group Turning Point USA, and he is a member of the highly-secretive far Christian right organization, Council for National Policy (CNP).

Fast forward to Tuesday.

Here’s Kirk complaining to Steve Bannon that Republicans didn’t vote in the November, 2022 election several weeks ago, “because a lot of people do not trust the system.”
