Weiner Will Resign At 2 PM Press Conference – Pelosi Major Impetus
Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) reportedly Wednesday night told his friends he will resign, just days after announcing he was taking a leave of absence and checking into a treatment facility. President Obama last week indirectly made clear his opinion that Weiner should resign, and Democratic leaders, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz have urged him publicly to resign.
“Pelosi told Weiner [she] plans to strip his committee seats, ‘basically said they would not rest until it was done,'” The New York Daily News reports via Twitter, adding that Weiner will announce his resignation in New York City today at 2:00 PM.
Ten days ago, Weiner told reporters he had “made terrible mistakes,” in what was quickly labeled “Weinergate,” his inappropriate online conversations with a half-dozen women, including sending multiple nude and lewd photos of himself to them.
The New York Times reports:
“Representative Anthony D. Weiner has told friends that he plans to resign his seat after coming under growing pressure from his Democratic colleagues to leave the House in the wake of revelations of his lewd online exchanges with women, said a person told of Mr. Weiner’s plans.
“The news comes as Democratic leaders prepared to hold a meeting on Thursday to discuss whether to strip the 46-year-old Congressman of his committee assignments, a blow which would severely damage his effectiveness.
“Mr. Weiner, a Democrat, came to the conclusion that he could no longer serve after having long discussions with his wife, Â Huma Abedin, when she returned home on Tuesday after traveling abroad with her boss, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.”
