The Catholic Vote, DOMA, And Marriage Equality
The Catholic vote — what it really means — has been upended, as we reported here and here and here and here, and as Lawrence O’Donnell Wednesday night reported in the video below.
To repeat what we’ve recently reported, and as O’Donnell mentions below, those opposed to DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Equality, include:
- 53% of white voters (33% support)
- 47% of non-white voters (35% support)
- 50% of men (35% support)
- 53% of women (33% support)
- 50% – 53% of every age demographic (31% – 37% support)
- 46% of those with a high school diploma or less (37% support)
- 58% post-high school (29% support)
- 52% of college grads (35% support)
- 46% to 57% majorities or pluralities in every geographic region, including the South.
- 51% of Catholics (37% support)
- 53% of Protestants (35% support)
Additionally, a large majority of American Catholics — 71% — support civil marriage equality for same-sex couples. The report also finds that almost half of Catholics, 43%, support allowing gay couples to marry regardless of type of ceremony (civil or religious,) and 31% of American Catholics support allowing same-sex couples to have civil unions, and 74% believe that same-sex relationships should be accepted by society. Additionally, the report finds that a majority of American Catholics (56%) believe same-gender sexual relations is not a sin, as opposed to the teachings of their church.

Oh, and while we’re in a Lawrence O’Donnell video-watching mode, take a look at this, one of my all-time favorite clips from The West Wing, on which O’Donnell was an executive producer.
