Superman Was An Illegal Alien
Over the weekend, some conservative Americans were aghast that a British actor, Henry Cavill, was chosen by Warner Brothers to play the role of Clark Kent, aka, Superman. Right now the number three story on conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart’s Big Hollywood says, “SUPERMAN CAST: UNKNOWN BRIT ACTOR TO FIGHT FOR ‘TRUTH, JUSTICE, AND THE AMERICAN WAY’.” And Tucker Carlson’s The Daily Caller says, “Now, before anyone freaks out about having a Brit play THE Superman, you should know that Deadline considers Cavill to be the most macho guy to don the famous blue tights considering his role as Theseus in Immortals.” Over in Twitter Land, the “top conservatives on Twitter” were saying things like, “Geez….an American can’t even get a job playing Superman,” and “WRONG! British actor to play Superman. What happened to “Truth, Justice, and the AMERICAN Way”?“ Well, as my better-half reminded me yesterday, Superman was an “illegal alien.”
Remember? “Yes, it’s Superman! Strange visitor from another planet who came to earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men.”
(Yup. Superman was, in fact, an undocumented worker. One wonders how Clark Kent ever got hired at The Daily Planet? Amazing that Perry White didn’t get arrested for hiring him, and that Lois Lane, ever in competition with Clark Kent for a scoop, didn’t report him to the INS, or ICE.)
The racist right wing of America is so enamored with its false concept of what America is and who is an American, that our closest brethern, the Brits, aren’t beyond their scourge.
To be fair, in the Big Hollywood piece, they write, “And so what if he’s a Brit?”
“What’s great and unique and exceptional about America is that anyone can become an American. Anyone can fight for truth, justice, and the American way. Never forget that the last American cast as Superman fought for truth justice and all that stuff.”
Yes. And all that “stuff.”
One of the comments written in the Big Hollywood piece mentioned above says, “Still leary about it being a British dude playing a distinctly American icon. That said, I’ll give it shot based on Chris Nolan’s involvement. So long as this is a COMPLETE reboot, and has no connection to the metrosexual absentee garbage that there was a few years ago.”
Well, sorry, but Chris Nolan, as in writer, director, producer Christopher Nolan, was born in London.
It’s almost amusing that so many right-wing fanatics are so hateful of anything not “American,” and yet they have no idea what “American” really is.
If Superman came to America today, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer would find a way to sick SB-1070 on him and try to throw him in jail.
If Superman came to America today, the Tea Party would demand to see his birth certificate. Kenya, Krypton, it’s all the same to the birthers.
If Superman came to America today, Glenn Beck would brand him a “Socialist,” for trying to help everyone, without letting the “free market” play its hand.
If Superman came to America today, Sarah Palin would accuse him of manufacturing a blood libel, and her daughter Willow would call him a “faggot” on Facebook.
As amusing as these examples may be, in fact, they reveal the blatant nationalism America’s extreme right wing has created in just a very few short years.
Now, what do you think would happen if Superman came to America today, and he was gay?…
