Resignation, Abdication,
I’m really struggling with something that I see quietly taking over our country: The resignation of many people, and yes, I’ll say it, many Christians, from facts and thinking to a pre-adolescent fascination with fate and “spirituality.” I put “spirituality” in quotes, not because I don’t believe in it, but because I don’t think they are doing it justice. There is a growing number of people who have handed their capacity for logic, reasoning, analysis and good old American common-sense over to “God.” And I put “God” in quotes not because I don’t believe in God, but because I don’t think they are doing him justice either. They have abdicated that which makes us most human: thinking.
Let’s take a look at the current debacle that is Governor Mark Sanford. Yes, he cheated on his wife. Now, it seems he’s had several girlfriends simce he’s been married. Yes, he inappropriately used state money to fund at least one of his trips to Argentina. And yes, he left the country, and his job, for five days, without delegating or designating any plans for succession. He skipped town to see his mistress and was AWOL from work.
