NOM’s Maggie Gallagher: Race-Baiting A “Non-Story” For A “Slow News Day”
Maggie Gallagher, the former president and former chairman of the board of NOM, the National Organization for Marriage, today attempted to defuse and minimize the story about NOM’s corporate race-baiting strategy that has taken the news media by storm. Gallagher, writing as she has for years at the National Review, penned an unusually terse piece, “BuzzFeed Exclusive! NOM Thinks Gay Marriage Not a Civil Right!”
Calling the story — which was actually published first by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) not Buzzfeed — a “non-story” for a “slow news day,” Gallagher writes that “[i]t’s always amusing to watch the media go to work to generate a non-story. In this case, it’s about ‘secret’ documents that show NOM reaches out to black and Latino churches to fight gay marriage.”

Well, that’s one way to spin it.
Or, there’s the truth.
First, the documents were secret, and we know that because they’re stamped “Confidential.”
Second, claiming that “NOM reaches out to black and Latino churches to fight gay marriage,” is a lot like saying Tom Sawyer reached out to all his friends let them whitewash his Aunt Polly’s fence.
Third, marriage is a civil right, as the Supreme Court has already stipulated.
Fourth, if you have to explain, you’re in trouble, and NOM really has been forced to explain.
Fifth, Google. In less than 24 hours almost 300 news stories on NOM’s race-baiting strategy to “win marriage” have appeared in Google News.
Sixth, BuzzFeed. The story Gallagher refers to, on Buzzfeed, has gone viral and had over 41,000 views. See the image at the top of this story.
Our own stories on this have been viewed thousands of times, in just a few hours. This, to paraphrase Joe Biden, is a fucking big deal.
