NOM Former Chair: Obama Policies “Declaration Of War” on “Religious Liberty”
Robert P. George, the former Chairman of NOM, the National Organization For Marriage, appeared today on James Dobson’s radio talk show claimed that President Obama’s policies were a “weapon” of the federal government designed to “undermine religious liberty.â€
“There’s a massive assault on religious liberty going on in this country right now, it is coming from the left and the Obama administration’s coming to power three years ago placed a powerful weapon, the entire apparatus of the federal government, at the disposal of those whose agenda it is to undermine religious liberty,” George told Dobson. “Now they’re not doing this simply because they dislike religious liberty, they’re doing it for reasons that are deeper than that. They understand that there is no way that you can completely win the victory they want to win on the issue of abortion, on the issue of embryo-destructive research, on sanctity of human life issues generally including assisted suicide and euthanasia, or prevail as they wish to prevail on redefining marriage without undermining religious liberty.”
Brian Tashman at Right Wing Watch (where there is audio of this,) also notes that George, “claims that the ‘massive assault on religious liberty’ is necessary for the left to win political debates on legal abortion, stem-cell research and marriage equality. George specifically called the mandate for insurance plans to cover contraception a ‘pure declaration of war on the Catholic Church’ and also ‘on the evangelical community and people of faith across the spectrum’.”
George, unfazed, claims,
“This is an unprecedented attack Jim on the religious liberty and the rights of conscience on all Americans, it is really an outrage. The Catholic bishops who have said it are absolutely right; it is a pure declaration of war on the Catholic Church and not only on the Catholic Church but on the evangelical community and people of faith across the spectrum.”

In October of last year, New Civil Rights Movement writer Scott Rose wrote,
Professor George founded the so-called National Organization for Marriage (NOM), which incessantly promulgates documentable untruths about gay human beings intended to demonize them in a political context. He was one of the authors of the notoriously anti-gay “Manhattan Declaration.â€Â From the tweedy confines of his Princeton University office, Professor George is a main instigator of a huge quantity of malicious anti-gay-rights propagandizing and political gay-bashing. He is the founder of the American Principles Project. That site’s “Innocence†tab includes links to articles that contain statements like this:
The “Health Literacy†section raises still more questions. It introduces concepts and skills on “violence,†“bullying,†and “safety.â€Â Such approaches are often subterfuges to encourage affirmation (and even promotion) of LGBT lifestyles.
Have you got that? Princeton University Professor Robert George promotes the idea that gay students and those perceived to be gay should not be given anti-bullying protections, because giving them such protections are “subterfuges†to encourage affirmation blah blah blah. The American Principles Project site also links to the “Maggie Report†which is connected with the Tea Party, whose member Dr. Rich Swier has said that anti-gay bullying is a “healthy†form of peer pressure.
