NOM “Condemns Intolerable Gay Activist Harassment” Of Rep. Allen West
NOM, the National Organization For Marriage, today issued a press release that “condemned the Florida Gay, Lesbian, Transgender Democratic Caucus for harassing Congressman Allen West over his support for traditional marriage, and sharply criticized the Wilton Manors Business Association for rescinding a speaking invitation to Congressman West in response to pressure from gay activists.”

“It is outrageous that gay activists would harass Congressman West because he believes in marriage between a man and a woman, and threaten to boycott members of a business group who invited him to speak on business issues,†said Brian Brown, NOM’s president. “Unfortunately, this is the new approach being utilized by the gay marriage movement in America. They do not want to civilly debate the issues; instead, they attempt to silence opponents through intimidation, harassment and threats.â€
Of course, NOM has it all wrong.
The Florida Gay, Lesbian, Transgender Democratic Caucus had no direct contact with Congressman West, and the word “harassment” is laughable.
Additionally, much to NOM’s chagrin, no doubt, the Florida GLBT Caucus opposed Congressman West’s appearance for a variety of reasons, his stance on marriage equality, no doubt, was only one of many.
What NOM leaves out is that Congressman West demanded that the meeting be a closed-door session, so, not open to the public, He also refused to discuss social issues, so much for a debate.
The Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus, and, anyone else for that matter, has every right to stage a protest or boycott when they are threatened by constant demeaning, false, homophobic, Islamophobic, misogynistic, hate speech — all the more so when that hate speech comes from an elected official.
Maggie Gallagher and her ilk have a history of utilizing these issues for their own cause. Did Gallagher or her team even both to reach out to West, the Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus, or the Wilton Manors Business Association? Did they do anything other than read a newspaper and see a fundraising opportunity?
Equally important, does Maggie Gallagher and her National Organization For Marriage, support the comments of Congressman West? Comments like, Obama supporters are a threat to the gene pool? Comments like, China is in control of the Panama Canal? Comments like “I have a clearance that even the president of the United States cannot obtain because of my background?”
The Wilton Manors Business Association had every right to un-invite Congressman West after learning their members did not support the invitation nor the Congressman’s hate speech. And the Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus had every right to demand West be un-invited.
Welcome to America, Maggie.
