Gallup: Gay Relationships Top Issue Dividing Republicans, Democrats
According to a new Gallup survey, same-sex relationships are the number one issue dividing Republicans and Democrats/Independents. Only 35% of Republicans, compared to 61% of Democrats and 61% of Independents, find gay relationships “morally acceptable,” with abortion coming in as the second largest area of disagreement. (Anyone hear 2010 and 2012 election rhetoric and attack plans forming?)
52% of Americans — the highest number since the question was first asked in 2001 –Â believe gay or lesbian relationships are “morally acceptable,” and 43% think they are “morally wrong.”
Men and women are almost equally matched when it comes to attitudes surrounding gay relationships, with 53% of men finding same-sex relationships “morally acceptable,” along with 51% of women.
By contrast, 92% of Americans think extra-marital affairs are “morally wrong.” Americans also find suicide, doctor-assisted suicide, abortion, cloning of animals or humans, and polygamy, more “morally wrong” than gay relationships.
The poll did not include questions about gay marriage.
A few questions to ponder:
Why, when the right-wing evangelicals, for example, “stray” into homosexuality, are they forgiven and welcomed back into the fold, when having an affair is so much worse than a gay relationship?
Why does Gallup even think same-sex relationships are issues of morality in the first place?
Because they aren’t.
The only issue of morality surrounding homosexuality is the bigotry and violence inflicted upon those who merely want to enjoy the benefits of a loving relationship.
Can we start polling on those issues, Gallup?
