Chris Christie Just Can’t Stop Talking About — And To — President Obama
Chris Christie just can’t stop talking about — and to — President Obama. Friday night the New Jersey Governor posted to Twitter a photo of himself talking to President Obama. “Talking with Pres. Obama about needs in #NJ at the ROIC Friday evening,” the GOP Governor tweeted. And that was after Christie spent much of the week singing Barack Obama’s praises. And rightly so.
What makes this even more exceptional is that Governor Christie — who was the GOP’s keynote speaker at the RNC, and, as Politico reveals today, Mitt Romney‘s first choice for VP up until he switched to Paul Ryan — has been taking a great deal of heat for being so supportive of President Obama just days before the presidential election.
Rupert Murdoch, the head of News Corp, the evil people who make Fox News and the Wall Street Journal on this side of the Atlantic, and the people who hack cell phones — allegedly, maybe — and were forced to shut down a century-old newspaper because of their allegedly criminal behavior across the pond, Friday night took to Twitter, and chastised Governor Christie, demanding he re-affirm his love for Mitt Romney — or else!
“Christie, while thanking O, must re- declare for Romney, or take blame for next four dire years.”
Gotta love how an Australian billionaire based in the U.K. and officially deemed “not a fit person to exercise the stewardship of a major international companyâ€Â by British Members of Parliament, thinks he has the right to tell American governors what to do.
And you gotta love how Murdoch thinks his endorsement of Romney helps Romney.
Really?
It’s kind of like Fox News Chief Roger Ailes offering “help off the record” to the Bush administration.
Who do these people think they are?
Â
And by “these people,” I also mean Rush Limbaugh.
The Republican Governor and Democratic President have even been labeled a same-sex couple by none other than Limbaugh. “Is it wrong for one man to love another man?†El Rushbo asked this week, adding that Christie went “overboard in praising a failed president.â€
On Thursday, the relatively right-leaning U.S. News added:
Rush Limbaugh called Christie “fat and a fool,” saying Christie “doesn’t know what he’s talking about.” Some have even speculated that Christie wants Obama to win re-election so the New Jersey governor himself can run for president in 2016. Others, like the Daily Caller’s Matt Lewis, have suggested something must have happened between Christie and Romney:
Based on his past support for Romney, it seems inconsistent that — with just six days to go before Election Day — Christie would now suddenly downplay the importance of the presidential election, and help bolster Obama’s re-election chances.
So what’s up? Is Christie angry he was passed over for vice president? Has he resigned himself to Romney’s defeat? Or is something else afoot?
At some level, my guess is there must have been a Christie/Romney schism. Anything else seems implausible.
U.S. News also offered a readers’ poll, asking, “Is Chris Christie a GOP Traitor for Praising Obama’s Response to Hurricane Sandy?” 88% said, “no.”
For what it’s worth, personally, I cannot stand Chris Christie. Aside from his political beliefs, I think he’s arrogant and rude and obnoxious and self-serving and a bit of a tyrant. But I think his performance the past few days has been exceptional, and it does my heart good to see him walking around with and supporting President Obama. Christie right now deserves kudos.
It’s not wrong to acknowledge good performance and behavior. Especially when we’re in the middle of a crisis that’s killed almost 100 Americans.
Of course, Chris Christie is a politician with White House aspirations. But for now, I’m glad he’s serving his state well, and I’m glad for his leadership and resolve and for being a good role model and beacon of hope for his people, because that’s what politics is supposed to be about.
