Bill Donohue, president of the virulently anti-gay Catholic League, has little — or, from his way of thinking, too much — faith in the American people, and automatically assumed that if scientists found “the gay gene,” America’s expectant parents would opt to abort unborn gay babies — and “force” the government to pay the bill.
I disagree. Strongly.
I believe that Americans are not that hate-filled. I believe that if scientists found “the gay gene,” the vast majority of American babies diagnosed to have “it” would not be aborted.
“Here’s a thought experiment,” Donohue posits. “Suppose there is a gay gene, and suppose prospective parents can learn whether a gay gene is present in their unborn baby. Now suppose a president proposes that employee insurance carriers, including religious non-profits, must cover abortions in those instances where prospective parents elect to abort their gay-gene carrying unborn baby.”
We’ll assume Donohue, writing in his short piece, “Religious Liberty And The Gay Gene,” isn’t singling out unborn babies who carry “the gay gene” for a “thought experiment” because that would be wildly disgusting and offensive.
Donohue automatically assumes America would opt to abort unborn gay babies — because his “thought experiment” doesn’t work in his favor if that were not the underlying assumption.
And to be fair, Donohue is trying to make the case that the Obama administration decision to ensure contraception services are available to all women isn’t about contraception but about religious liberty, but the point stands when he writes:
There are several issues here for a survey to consider: preventive health care; the First Amendment right to religious liberty; the public funding of abortion; and the intentional weeding out of the homosexual population.
[Emphasis ours.]
Lovely.
But back to the issue at hand.
Clearly, Bill Donohue, who has never displayed an original thought, is channeling Ann Coulter circa September, 2010, who said, at a gay Republican group’s fundraiser:
Once [scientists] find the gay gene, guess who’s getting aborted?
Disgusting. And false.
Nice try, Ann, and Bill.
Because the people who hate gay people are also the people who hate abortion. And if Bill Donohue thinks that anti-abortion Americans would abort unborn children because they will be gay at birth, what does that say about Donohue, and the “pro-life movement”?
Which means, Bill, that you have no faith — zero — in your Catholic flock.
Not to mention, doesn’t this mean Donohue accepts the fact that homosexuality is genetic? Or does his “thought experiment” not go that far?
Truth be told, Catholics actually support the rights of the LGBT community and same-sex marriage at a higher rate than the average American.
Yes, Bill Donohue is virulently homophobic. It’s truly clouding his reasoning. And it’s truly disgusting.
