Breaking: Diana Nyad Successfully Completes Swim From Cuba To Florida (Video, Photos)
Diana Nyad just became the first person to successfully swim 103 miles from Havana, Cuba, to Key West, Florida — without a shark cage. The 64-year old has tried to complete what she herself calls her “xtreme dream,” four other times, all unsuccessful, the first in 1978. This time, Nyad, who is 64, began her trip August 31, and landed at about 1:54 PM EDT, totaling about 53 hours of non-stop swimming.
Nyad, who is openly-lesbian, has broken several world records, and was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1986 and the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2003. She is the author of three books, including Other Shores, and the subject of a documentary film, The Channel.
