As May Ends, Two More Violent Anti-Gay Hate Crimes In NYC Put Month’s Total At 11
Two more violent anti-gay hate crimes in New York City over the past week are now being reported, closing the month of May at an astounding eleven, and putting this year’s total at about 30 — more than double last year’s year-to-date total. NYC’s Anti-Violence Project reports the tenth “incident occurred on the J train in Brooklyn on Saturday Night, May 27th, which was reported to AVP by multiple concerned community members this week.”
A gay man was approached on the train by an individual yelling an anti-gay slur, and then was punched in the face. AVP is reaching out to community partners, as well as New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, the Hate Crimes Task Force of the NYPD and the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office to further investigate this assault.
NY1, which has images of the suspect, reports:
The suspect in Sunday’s attack is said to be between the ages of 25 and 30. Police say he is approximately 6 feet in height and has dark hair, which is tied in a bun. Police say he was last seen wearing a blue denim jacket.

The AVP also reports on the eleventh, and hopefully final anti-LGBT violent hate crime for the month, barring any others that have yet to come to light:
The New York City Anti-Violence Project is investigating reports of an eleventh incident of anti-gay violence to occur in New York City this month. The latest incident occurred on Wednesday night, May 29th in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. The survivor, Bronx resident Kevin Kiaddi was with friends in Prospect Park when they encountered a group of men. According to media reports, when Kiaddi offered one of the men a soda, the group began beating him and shouting anti-gay slurs. According to the same reports, five men have been arrested and are charged with gang assault and hate crimes charges. AVP is working with the survivor in this most recent, brutal attack. AVP is also reaching out to community partners, as well as New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, the Hate Crimes Task Force of the NYPD and the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office to further investigate this assault.
Noting “[s]o far this year, there have been some 30 gay bias attacks in the New York City, more than double for the same period last year,” CBS offers this report:
