‘God Hates Gays’ Says Utah Road Detour Construction Sign
A road construction sign warning drivers of an upcoming detour alternatively is flashing “Follow Detour” and “God Hates Gays.” The woman who posted this video to YouTube today notes:
“Saw this on my way home from work tonight, on University Ave, Provo. East Bay.”
She adds, “I thought this was messed up.” We agree.
Provo is the third-largest city in Utah. Salt Lake City, home to the Mormon Church, is the largest Utah city.
Eric Ethington of PRIDEinUtah told The New Civil Rights Movement, “Anytime a message of hate is spread, it only looks bad on those saying it. The LGBT community of Utah is as strong as ever, and we are not bullied or intimidated by childish pranks committed by those who know they cannot hold back the inevitable tide of equality.”
It’s easy to think some bored road worker thought this was a funny joke. To the millions of LGBTQ kids struggling to find themselves and acceptance, it’s an invitation to a far more harmful detour.
