Twas The Fight Before Christmas
Jean Ann Esselink

Twas the week before Christmas
And all through the House,
The Grinches were vying,
For World’s Biggest Louse.

The Affordable Care Act,
Had made the House crazy.
(Though their own health care plan,
Remains somewhat hazy.)

And while the Tea Party stymied,
Poor Speaker John Boehner.
Events in the Senate,
Were hardly much saner.

Continued abuse of
The filibuster power,
Earned the “nuclear option”,
And that’s turned the mood sour.

Compromise on the Dream Act?
We might let the kids stay.
But we’ll be sending their
mothers and fathers away.

Extend Unemployment?
Sorry, that’s a non-starter.
Hungry children make parents,
Seek work so much harder.

The best way to teach kids,
There is no free lunch?
End Head Start and WIC milk,
For the whole greedy bunch.

Any bill that helped people,
Congress sought to despoil it.
No wonder their ratings,
Were down in the toilet.

In red states and blue states,
Things were just as divided.
Each clamoring for policies,
The other derided.

Some states want gay marriage,
Some are proud homophobes.
Some want dignified abortions.
Some use vaginal probes.

Some states support workers,
And fair living pay.
Some states side with bosses,
Whatever they say.

Some want health care for all,
Some want health care for none.
Some states want gun laws,
And some states want guns.

In some states you’re able,
To sue anti-gay bullies,
And some states have laws
To enable them fully.

There just seems no way,
That the wall can be breached.
That peace can be found.
That detente can be reached.

Does no one remember,
what “America” means?
We’re one nation. One family.
Each chasing his dream.

We were “Give us your poor.”
And “Leave no one behind.”
We were “One man, one vote”,
And our justice was blind.

If I had one Christmas wish,
On one bright Christmas star,
I’d wish that our “leaders”,
Had a clue who we are.

If you enjoyed this year’s Fight Before Christmas, you might want to reminisce about Christmases past:
