83-year old televangelist Pat Robertson today on his “700 Club” TV show claimed “we’re not anti-gay,” despite saying just days ago he wished Facebook had a “vomit” button to click for photos of same-sex couples kissing.
Robertson amusingly also seems to be under the delusion that the LGBT community is a big supporter of his work.
“I am very pleased that we have many, many, many homosexuals watching this program and many of them are looking for love and acceptance and help,” Robertson told his audience, “and I’m glad to report that we have thousands of these people who are saying, ‘yes we want to follow Jesus, we’re not happy with the lifestyle we’re in and we want to have a better way,’ I think it’s wonderful that that’s happening.”
Amusing how Robertson calls LGBT people “these people,” but what’s not amusing is all the other things he has called LGBT people, and all the disasters he has blamed on the LGBT community.
Robertson famously has said lesbians are “evil,” homosexuality is an “obsession,” and “a compulsion,” adding, “I think it is somehow related to demonic possession.” He’s called same-sex marriage an “abomination,” and said God will destroy America because of it.
It’s a good thing Robertson is not anti-gay because, well, just imagine what he’d be saying about LGBT people if he were.
Just one month ago, Robertson comically said gay people are willing to “destroy” the Boy Scouts of America “to accommodate a few kids who want to do sex with each other. It just boggles the mind.” He added, it “breaks your heart” to see gay people, who “amount to, maximum two percent of the population,” destroying the Scouts. He added this “tiny minority” of LGBT people is “willing to rip apart the framework of traditional marriage; to rip apart an organization that has done so much good for young people, the Boy Scouts; to rip apart certain of these other things that we have counted as important in our society; all for one thing: that the way they do sex will be accepted in the mainstream of society.”
In May, Robertson said a gay person can change their sexual orientation just as “a murderer can change, a rapist can change, a thief can change.”
One month earlier, Robertson said said that there’s nothing “bigoted” about calling homosexuality an abomination, adding that ESPN should “man-up” and defend Chris Broussard, the reporter who said NBA center Jason Collins is not a Christian and “walking in open rebellion to God and to Jesus Christ.”
Earlier this year, Robertson lamented “predators as boy scouts, pedophiles as scoutmasters.”
Last year, Robertson said when it comes to Chick-Fil-A, gay people should “shut their mouth” until they can produce a child from their rectums. he also claimed “the union of two men doesn’t bring forth anything except disease, apparently, and suffering, and the same thing with the union of two women.”
Also in today’s video, Robertson falsely states that homosexuality is the result of sexual abuse, which is a lie the Christian right loves to tell.
“A lot of people are into this homosexual thing because they’ve been abused by a parent, abused by a coach, abused by a sibling, abused by a friend, they’re little boys and little girls and they don’t know any better and then they somehow think, ‘well I must be gay,’ they aren’t they are heterosexual and they just need to come out of that.”
