Updated: ‘I’m A Good Man. And I’m A Gay Man And Jesus Loves Me’ Says Subway Rider To Preacher

by David Badash on February 19, 2013

in News,Religion

A gay man who apparently had enough of a New York City subway preacher spewing anti-gay hate decided to respond. “I’m a man. And I’m a good man. And I’m a gay man and Jesus loves me. Jesus loves me,” the gay man yells back at the preacher, to great applause.

While many of our readers know standard operating procedure in these situations is to ignore people like this preacher because they likely have mental health issues and could become dangerous, it’s gratifying to see someone standing up to them.

Update: New York Magazine’s Intelligencer first ran this video, then Towleroad, then Gawker. Many of the comments at Towleroad and Gawker — especially Gawker — focused on the religion aspect, with readers writing the man doesn’t need to believe in Jesus for his self-worth.

Also, at some point the video dropped out — here it is. (Curse you, iframe!)

Religion is no excuse for rudeness. Especially on the Subway.

It was brave of this man to stand up to a possibly dangerous person and it was brave to declare he was gay to a train full of people. The fact they cheered for him says so much about how far we have come.
At this point in my life, I refuse to take crap from people any more. Everyone has an opinion and that is fine as long a they keep it to themselves. When they can't keep their mouth shut and hate comes out, it is time we all stood up.
He did not shout or say anything nasty but let the preacher know he was wrong and hateful.
Good for him!

…and IN UK: Nurse destroys archbishop’s gay marriage stance with a stroke of her pen http://tinyurl.com/a9ypr6d
She tells him the so-called ‘Princes of the Church’ should ditch the ‘silk, the gold, the Gucci shoes, the ridiculous tall hats’ in favor of a simple pilgrim’s staff and get on with helping real people.
And she says Jesus ‘appears to have happily shared meals with prostitutes, drunkards, lepers, Gentiles and I do not doubt with people of same-sex orientation’.
