The unstoppable women of the Dutch National team added to the out and proud Olympians’ medal count today, with a 2-0 win over Argentina. The gold medal team from the Netherlands boasts four gay athletes, Marilyn Agliotti  Carlien Dirkse-van-den-Heuvel, Kim Lammers, and team captain Maarjte Paumen. Both Carlien and Maartje scored goals in the gold medal game.

The addition of four more gold medals brings the total “Out and Proud” medal count to nine, including six gold, one silver and two bronze. It’s quite an impressive medal count for a contingent of only twenty-four out gay athletes.

There are still two events tomorrow that can add to the gay athletes’ medal count. The US Womens Basketball Team, with out and proud Seimone Augustus, plays France tomorrow for the gold medal. and Australia’s Matthew Mitcham has a chance at a medal tomorrow in men’s 10 meter platform diving.

Congratulations to the women of the Dutch Hockey Team, and to all our out and proud gay athletes!

Here is article about Megan Rapinoe, she is a 'local' gal from Redding (about 60 mi north of here) note made of orientation of course, it wasn't really pertinent for this article, unless perhaps her partner had been there.
'From Redding home, Rapinoe family cheers soccer star's gold-medal victory'

One of our writers, Stuart Wilbur, did a great piece on Megan Rapinoe, and her advice to other gay athletes to come out, earlier today… You should add this to that discussion.
